OpenAI brings ChatGPT magic to NORAD's Santa tracker
OpenAI just teamed up with NORAD to launch three holiday tools inside ChatGPT for the annual Santa tracking tradition. Families can turn photos into elf helpers, generate printable coloring pages from toy ideas, and create custom read-aloud stories, all accessible via NORAD's official website.

Every December, the most heavily armed aerospace defense command on the planet tracks an airborne sleigh delivering presents. Now, OpenAI is joining in on the fun.
OpenAI has officially teamed up with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to build three interactive holiday features directly inside ChatGPT and on the official NORAD Tracks Santa website.
Three new tricks for the holiday season
Instead of launching another ultra-complex enterprise agent, OpenAI built three straightforward tools tailored for parents and kids navigating the busy holiday month.
The first is Elf Enrollment. It is an image tool that lets families upload a photo and turn themselves or their kids into certified helpers at the North Pole, ready to be saved as a digital holiday keepsake.
The second feature, Santa’s Toy Lab, solves a very specific parenting headache. Kids often dream up bizarre, impossible toys that do not exist on store shelves. Parents can describe the invention to ChatGPT, which then converts the prompt into a simple, printable line-art coloring page.
The third addition is the Christmas Story Creator. Built like a holiday Mad Libs, it lets families plug in specific names, hometowns, and silly details to generate a custom holiday tale designed to be read aloud before bedtime.
Why it matters
This is a remarkably clever culture play from OpenAI.
For everyday families, these features are zero-friction. You do not need prompt engineering skills or technical know-how to get a personalized coloring page or a custom bedtime story in seconds. If you have young kids bouncing off the walls this month, it is genuinely worth pulling up at the kitchen table.
From an industry standpoint, OpenAI is borrowing decades of goodwill from one of the most beloved holiday traditions in North America. AI companies have spent the past year defending themselves against safety concerns and corporate dread. Teaming up with NORAD lets OpenAI reframe ChatGPT not as a scary workplace disruptor, but as wholesome household software.
We also like how restrained the execution is. Instead of letting kids chat freely with an unpredictable AI Santa, OpenAI kept the guardrails tight with fill-in-the-blank storytelling and static coloring sheets. It delivers the novelty without the safety risks that usually plague generative AI for kids.
