ChatGPT just got a Santa voice for the holidays
OpenAI just rolled out a festive 'Santa Mode' across all ChatGPT platforms for the holiday season. Users can tap the snowflake icon next to the chat bar to talk with a jolly-sounding Santa Claus, and the conversations won't save to history or touch your memory. It is free for everyone, but only until the end of the month.

If you have kids at home asking for proof that Santa is real, OpenAI just gave you an unusually high-tech answer. As part of its 12 Days of OpenAI rollout, the company launched a festive Santa Mode inside ChatGPT across all platforms.
Anyone using the mobile app, web, or the desktop clients on macOS and Windows can try it right now. All you need to do is tap the little snowflake icon next to the prompt bar. Once you do, ChatGPT switches to a boomy, jolly voice that sounds pretty much like every classic Santa you grew up hearing.
To make things even better for families, OpenAI made sure Santa chats are private. None of the conversations will be saved to your chat history, and nothing said will alter ChatGPT's long-term memory.
Santa gets eyes
Santa's voice is only half of the story here. Alongside the holiday character, OpenAI finally started rolling out the real-time vision capabilities for Advanced Voice Mode that it first teased roughly seven months ago.
For Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers, you can now tap the video icon during a voice chat to let ChatGPT see through your camera. That means Santa can look at your holiday tree, inspect a gift, or chat with your family while watching what is happening in real time. You can also share your device's screen through the menu to let it walk you through a tricky setting or a homework question.
This rollout will take about a week to reach eligible subscribers. Enterprise and Edu tiers will have to wait until January, and users in the EU and several European nations do not have a launch timeline yet.
As for Santa himself, this is strictly a temporary gig. OpenAI says he will stay on the platform through the end of December, after which he is retiring back to the North Pole.
Why it matters
We think dropping Santa Mode alongside real-time vision is a brilliant piece of consumer marketing.
Technically, real-time video understanding is complex and computationally expensive. But instead of delivering a dry technical demo, OpenAI wrapped it in a festive holiday persona that families can immediately play with in their living rooms. By keeping the conversations out of chat history and memory, they also neatly solved the privacy hesitation parents might feel when letting their children talk to an AI.
It is also a clear competitive move. Right after Google unveiled Gemini 2.0, OpenAI answered by shipping the long-awaited multimodal voice and vision directly into everyday consumer hands. Putting real-time camera interaction into a friendly holiday package makes high-end AI feel warm and accessible, keeping OpenAI firmly at the center of the cultural conversation.
