OpenAI to launch compute-heavy features with extra fees
OpenAI is rolling out a series of compute-intensive offerings over the next few weeks, according to CEO Sam Altman. Due to heavy compute costs, some features will initially be limited to Pro subscribers, while other products will carry additional fees. Altman noted that while driving down intelligence costs remains the ultimate goal, the team wants to see what's possible when throwing massive compute at ambitious ideas today.

Sam Altman just gave everyone a heads up: OpenAI's most ambitious new features are about to cost extra.
On X, Altman announced that OpenAI will roll out several compute-intensive offerings over the coming weeks. Due to the high compute costs involved, some of these features will initially be restricted to Pro subscribers, while other new products will carry additional fees on top of existing plans.
Pushing compute to the limits
Altman emphasized that OpenAI's long-term goal hasn't changed. The company still wants to aggressively drive down the cost of intelligence and make its tools widely accessible over time.
However, he noted that the team wants to learn what becomes possible right now when they throw massive amounts of compute, at today's model costs, at interesting new ideas.
Why it matters
This marks a turning point for OpenAI's monetization strategy. The flat-rate subscription model works well for everyday chat, but heavy inference and complex tasks quickly break that unit economics. If OpenAI wants to test the outer limits of what models can do, someone has to cover the cloud bill.
We think this is a clear sign that cutting-edge AI capabilities are becoming premium, metered services. For power users and developers, getting early access to peak intelligence won't be bundled into an all-you-can-eat tier anymore. OpenAI is testing both the technological frontier and how much users are actually willing to pay to touch it.
