OpenAI brings conversational ads and AI agents to ChatGPT

Published Reach 43

OpenAI just expanded its ChatGPT advertising platform with Sponsored Agents, letting users chat directly with a brand's AI agent after clicking an ad. Advertisers can now build campaigns using simple natural-language prompts in ChatGPT Work and get AI-generated copy suggestions. Native integrations with HubSpot and Shopify also bring campaign management directly into merchants' existing workflows.

OpenAI just gave its advertising ambitions a massive upgrade, rolling out a suite of conversational ad tools designed to turn ChatGPT into a direct shopping channel.

The headliner is Sponsored Agents, an ad format currently in testing with select advertisers in the United States.

Instead of the old-school workflow where clicking an ad dumps you straight onto a third-party landing page, users can now tap an ad to open a dedicated, clearly labeled chat with a business-sponsored AI agent.

Think of it as an interactive product specialist. If you spot an ad for a dining table, you can immediately ask if it fits an eight-foot dining nook, what kind of wood finish it uses, or how many chairs it seats before you ever visit the seller's store.

OpenAI made a point to note that these sponsored sessions remain completely separate from ChatGPT’s standard independent answers, and they will not blend into the user’s original chat thread.

Prompting your way through ad campaigns

OpenAI is also trying to make the operational side of advertising painless for brands by bringing conversational AI into campaign management.

Marketers can now build, adjust, and review ad campaigns directly inside ChatGPT by prompting the Ads Manager plugin. You can feed it a project brief or a product URL, and the system will spin up campaign structures and performance takeaways.

Inside Ads Manager itself, the platform now generates suggested copy and visual assets based on your landing pages and targets. Advertisers can also toggle on an automated customization feature that tunes headlines to the context of a conversation and translates copy on the fly.

To lock down distribution, OpenAI brought in its first major commerce and CRM partners: Shopify and HubSpot.

Starting today, eligible US merchants can install the ChatGPT Ads app right from the Shopify App Store, syncing their Shopify Catalog directly to launch ads in a few clicks. Meanwhile, HubSpot users can connect accounts, launch ads, and track leads right where they manage their customer pipeline.

Why it matters

We think this launch signals the beginning of conversational commerce taking market share from traditional search ads.

For shoppers, getting clear answers to specific buying questions inside a conversation beats digging through clunky ecommerce landing pages every time. The friction drops dramatically. The tradeoff, of course, is that the line between helpful advice and corporate persuasion gets blurrier, even with explicit labels in place.

For the ad industry, partnering directly with Shopify and HubSpot is an extraordinarily smart shortcut. OpenAI avoided the nightmare of forcing brands to rebuild their workflows from scratch. By hooking directly into existing inventory feeds and CRM pipelines, it makes testing ChatGPT Ads practically zero-friction for thousands of businesses.

If Google built an empire on intent-based link clicking, OpenAI seems determined to own the deliberation phase that happens right before the purchase.
