OpenAI brings ChatGPT Record mode to Mac Plus users
OpenAI just expanded its macOS Record mode globally to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers. The tool captures meetings, brainstorms, or quick voice notes, letting ChatGPT transcribe the audio, pull out key takeaways, and turn them directly into follow-up tasks, project plans, or code.

Nobody enjoys taking meeting notes, and having an awkward third-party AI bot sit as a silent participant in your Zoom call has never felt great.
OpenAI just rolled out its built-in Record Mode globally to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers on macOS. The feature, which lets your desktop app listen in and turn audio into structured notes, was previously restricted to Team, Enterprise, and Edu workspace accounts.
No meeting bot required
The feature sits quietly as a small round icon right at the bottom of the macOS chat interface. Grant microphone access, and ChatGPT begins capturing local system audio alongside your voice.
Crucially, you do not need an AI agent to dial into your Google Meet or Teams call. Whether it is an online strategy sync or a solo late-night voice brain dump, ChatGPT listens locally without announcing itself to everyone else in the room.
As you talk, the app transcribes live on-screen with a timer. You can pause the recording to catch your breath, resume whenever you want, or trash the whole file with a quick tap of the delete button if the conversation goes sideways.
Straight into Canvas
Once you hit send, the audio uploads to OpenAI’s servers to be processed and organized into a clean, structured breakdown.
Instead of dumping a wall of text into a regular chat thread, ChatGPT opens a dedicated private Canvas. It extracts the big takeaways, drafts follow-up emails, sketches project timelines, or even writes workable code based on what was discussed.
You can manually edit the summary inside the Canvas. OpenAI also notes that ChatGPT can consult previous canvases and transcripts down the road, giving future conversations full context on what you decided three weeks ago.
Why it matters
We think this update quietly puts immense pressure on standalone AI meeting notetakers like Otter and Granola. For millions of remote workers paying for ChatGPT Plus anyway, there is very little reason left to keep an extra subscription for meeting summaries.
OpenAI was clever to leverage macOS system-level audio capture. By bypassing the need to integrate with Zoom or Teams calendars, it seamlessly turns the chatbot into an ambient listener that lives natively on your desktop.
The convenience is obvious, but there is a clear catch. Because the app captures system sound without visibly joining as a participant, it makes silent, non-consensual recording trivially easy. Teams handling confidential data or operating in jurisdictions with strict consent rules will need to tread very carefully before hitting record.
