OpenAI brings ChatGPT straight into PowerPoint
OpenAI just launched an official ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint in beta across all user tiers. You can now build, rewrite, and generate slides directly from a sidebar without losing editable formatting, or turn existing docs into presentation-ready content. Why it matters: It cuts out the awkward copy-pasting from web chats, though complex templates aren't fully supported yet.

Building a slide deck is easily one of the most universally dreaded chores in everyday work. For a long time, the routine felt painfully fragmented: you asked ChatGPT in a browser to draft your points, then manually copied, pasted, and fixed broken line breaks across blank slides.
OpenAI rolled out an official answer, launching the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in in beta. The integration is available globally across all account tiers, including Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans.
Slides that stay completely editable
Getting it set up is straightforward. In PowerPoint, head to Home, click Add-ins, search for ChatGPT, and log in with your OpenAI account. Once installed, a dedicated ChatGPT pane docks neatly on the right side of your workspace.
From there, you can feed it messy meeting notes, project docs, or spreadsheets and ask it to assemble a full presentation with a coherent storyline. If you already have a draft deck, you can ask ChatGPT to identify weak arguments, rewrite dense bullet points, or suggest questions an executive might ask. The add-in also lets you generate AI images directly on the canvas and tap into connected third-party tools.
Crucially, ChatGPT doesn't export flattened, static images. Everything it produces remains native and fully editable, meaning you can adjust text, colors, and layout directly inside PowerPoint just like any regular slide.
Still rough on complex styling
Despite the convenience, OpenAI is candid about its current beta limits. In its FAQ, the company noted that advanced PowerPoint capabilities are not fully supported yet, especially intricate templates and bespoke font handling. OpenAI strongly recommends reviewing all generated slides before sharing.
On the privacy front, data shared through Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teacher accounts is not used to train OpenAI models by default. Personal tier users can also review and modify their data sharing settings at any time.
The launch follows OpenAI's previous integration for Excel, marking another clear step toward embedding AI across everyday productivity suites.
Why it matters
We think this release solves the single most annoying bottleneck in AI-assisted presentations: the friction between a chat window and actual working software. Dedicated presentation generators often lock you into rigid designs, while web chats require endless manual copying. By keeping native slide elements editable, OpenAI offers a genuinely useful zero-to-one drafting engine right inside the tool people already open every day.
Strategically, this is an intriguing power move. Microsoft has been charging steep subscription fees to push its own Copilot across Office apps. Yet OpenAI has just placed an official, highly functional ChatGPT sidebar inside PowerPoint that even free tier users can access. OpenAI is signaling loud and clear that it won't stay confined to a web tab, effectively meeting users right where work actually happens.
