OpenAI simplifies ChatGPT custom instructions
OpenAI just updated the custom instructions UI inside ChatGPT, making it much easier to tweak how the bot talks to you. The refreshed interface lets you directly set the personality traits you want it to have, its tone of voice, and any guardrails it should follow.

OpenAI just refreshed the custom instructions interface in ChatGPT, making it much easier to dial in how the assistant responds to you.
With the updated UI, you no longer have to guess what goes into an intimidating blank prompt box. The new layout lets you directly specify the traits you want ChatGPT to have, how you want it to talk to you, and any specific rules it needs to follow.
Giving your chatbot a personality
Previously, custom instructions felt a bit like homework: users had to figure out how to structure their own system prompts, which led many people to either ignore the feature entirely or copy clunky templates from the internet.
By breaking the setup into clear categories—personality traits, conversational tone, and ground rules—the process becomes far more guided and approachable for everyday users.
Why it matters
For regular users, this is an immediate quality-of-life win. You do not need to be a prompt engineer to stop ChatGPT from sounding like a generic corporate brochure; setting up rules like being concise or speaking like a peer takes just a minute and pays off in every chat.
From an industry perspective, we think this shows OpenAI shifting attention toward product polish. When frontier models are all reasonably capable, keeping users around often comes down to whose assistant feels the most comfortable to live with. The real test, of course, is whether ChatGPT will actually stick to those rules consistently without drifting back to its default habits mid-conversation.
