OpenAI reportedly bringing Sora video generation to ChatGPT
OpenAI is reportedly planning to integrate its Sora video generator directly into ChatGPT, according to The Information. The move mirrors last year's rollout of built-in image creation, aiming to win back users amid stiff competition from Claude, though it could also spike operating costs and deepen deepfake concerns.

OpenAI is reportedly getting ready to pull its biggest multimedia lever yet to win back users.
According to The Information, OpenAI is planning to integrate its Sora video generator directly into ChatGPT. Right now, Sora only lives on a dedicated website and a standalone app, which haven't gained anywhere near the massive traction of ChatGPT.
Video moves to the main chat
The move closely follows the playbook OpenAI used last year when it baked image generation straight into ChatGPT. Instead of making people switch apps, users will soon be able to generate full AI videos right inside their standard chat thread.
However, opening the floodgates to ChatGPT’s massive audience brings serious baggage. When Sora launched less than a year ago, users quickly made disrespectful deepfakes of figures like Martin Luther King Jr., alongside piles of copyrighted content.
Putting Sora into ChatGPT makes the tool vastly more accessible, and history shows guardrails rarely hold up for long. Users routinely find clever prompt workarounds to bypass safety filters or scrape off the AI watermarks entirely.
Pentagon backlash and costly compute
The timing here isn't random. OpenAI is facing intense heat from Anthropic, whose Claude assistant has seen a massive surge in popularity over recent weeks while ChatGPT logged a wave of uninstalls.
The exodus started after Anthropic publicly rejected Pentagon terms that would allow Claude to be used for mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. OpenAI, on the other hand, agreed to the Pentagon’s deal, triggering a swift user boycott. Dropping Sora into ChatGPT looks like an aggressive attempt to stem the bleeding.
There is also a very real compute bill to consider. Video generation eats resources at an incredible rate, and The Information noted the integration could significantly increase OpenAI’s operating costs.
ChatGPT already started testing ads on its cheapest paid tiers last month. Adding heavy video rendering to the mix could easily force OpenAI to shake up its pricing structures yet again.
Why it matters
For creators and everyday users, having video generation inside a single prompt box is obviously convenient. But don't expect it to come cheap: with OpenAI already adding ads to budget tiers to offset compute, heavy Sora usage will almost certainly come with tight caps, pricier upgrades, or more ads.
From an industry standpoint, OpenAI is trying to change the battlefield. Claude is beating them on pure model goodwill and developer trust right now, so OpenAI is falling back on product surface area by making ChatGPT the ultimate all-in-one suite.
We think this play is clever on distribution but risky on execution. Giving hundreds of millions of users frictionless access to high-fidelity video will test OpenAI’s safety filters like never before, all while burning an immense amount of cash right when the company is already scrambling to monetize ChatGPT.
