OpenAI's Sora is officially heading to Copilot

Published Reach 31

Microsoft just confirmed that OpenAI's Sora video generator will eventually make its way to Copilot. Advertising and web services CEO Mikhail Parakhin replied on X that integration is planned, though it will take time. There is no official timeline yet, but bringing text-to-video directly into Copilot promises to significantly expand its multimodal creative toolkit.

OpenAI’s mind-bending text-to-video model Sora is barely out in the wild, and everyone already wants to know where they can actually type a prompt and watch it work.

Now, Microsoft just dropped a major hint. Mikhail Parakhin, Microsoft’s CEO of Advertising and Web Services, confirmed on X that Sora will eventually make its way into Copilot, though users will need to sit tight for a bit.

The tweet confirmation

The confirmation arrived in a casual social media exchange. A user bluntly asked Parakhin whether Sora would be coming to Copilot.

His response was short and clear: “Eventually, but it will take time.”

While there is no formal release window or roadmap attached to the remark, it signals that Microsoft is treating Sora the same way it treated DALL-E and GPT-4 by plugging OpenAI’s premier tech straight into its assistant.

Packing video into Copilot

Sora was teased publicly just days ago, showing off the ability to turn detailed text prompts into 60-second, high-fidelity videos.

According to OpenAI, Sora learns using a network that compresses regular videos down to their most crucial components. The model then studies those simplified videos to generate brand-new, motion-consistent scenes.

Integrating that kind of processing muscle into Copilot is no small feat. Microsoft is still working through the technical hurdles of wiring such a heavy generative pipeline into a consumer-facing tool.

Why it matters

We think Microsoft’s game plan here is both predictable and ruthless. It reaffirms that Copilot is meant to be the default consumer gateway for whatever frontier AI OpenAI dreams up.

For developers and creators, having a 60-second video engine built into a ubiquitous workspace tool could reshape rapid prototyping and storyboarding. But nobody should hold their breath for a public rollout tomorrow.

The real elephant in the room is compute. Rendering a minute of coherent, hyper-detailed video burns orders of magnitude more compute than answering search queries or generating code. Figuring out how to serve Sora at scale without melting servers or charging an arm and a leg is the real bottleneck Microsoft now has to solve.
