Google's NotebookLM is finally coming to mobile

Published Reach 33

Google just opened preorders for NotebookLM on iOS and Android, with an expected launch date of May 20. Previously limited to desktop browsers, the mobile apps will allow users to manage notebooks, upload files from phones or tablets, and listen to Audio Overviews on the go. Why it matters: Bringing the research assistant to mobile makes catching up on complex documents and listening to custom summaries far more practical away from your desk.

If you have ever used Google's NotebookLM to turn a 50-page dry PDF into an engaging AI podcast, you probably wondered why on earth it was trapped in a desktop browser.

That desktop-only limitation is finally ending. Google has quietly listed dedicated NotebookLM apps on both the iOS App Store and Google Play for preorder, with an expected release date of May 20.

Pocket-sized research partner

Since its debut in 2023, NotebookLM has been one of Google's surprise AI hits. Researchers, students, and professionals fell in love with its ability to ground answers strictly in their own uploaded documents, and its Audio Overviews feature quickly went viral for generating shockingly natural two-host discussions.

According to the app store listings, the mobile version will not be a stripped-down shell. Users can create new notebooks, browse existing ones, and upload files directly from their phones or tablets.

Most importantly, you will be able to play your generated Audio Overviews directly on your phone while on the move, essentially turning your research into a custom podcast feed for your commute.

Google is also supporting iPads and Android tablets with larger screens, making side-by-side multitasking practical.

The May 20 launch target lines up with the first day of Google I/O 2025, where Google will almost certainly highlight the mobile apps and reveal what is next for the tool.

Why it matters

Audio Overviews was always meant for mobile, but users were stuck playing audio files through clumsy mobile web workarounds. Bringing native apps to phones and tablets finally gives NotebookLM the distribution vehicle its best feature deserved.

For knowledge workers and students, this is an immediate win. Being able to drop a document straight from your phone's share sheet into a notebook and listen to a summary while walking the dog is practical AI at its best.

For Google, NotebookLM represents one of its cleanest product victories in the generative AI race. Instead of pushing generic chatbots, it built a focused, grounded research tool that actually solves information overload. Giving it dedicated real estate on mobile home screens will make it much harder for competitors to displace.
