Nadella shuts down plan to make AI agents addictive

Published Reach 42

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella just rebuked an internal memo advocating to make users "addicted" to Scout, the company's new AI agent. Nadella told roughly 50 top AI engineers that addiction is "absolutely a non goal," suggesting the author might want to work elsewhere. The swift pushback draws a hard line between sticky enterprise software and predatory engagement tactics.

If you pitch product addiction inside Microsoft right now, Satya Nadella might suggest updating your resume.

According to a report from The Information, Microsoft corporate vice president Omar Shahine circulated an internal memo outlining a three-stage plan for Scout, the company's new AI agent. The starting point was turning it into an "addictive app" before scaling it into a broader agentic platform.

Drawing a line on engagement tricks

Nadella shut down the idea swiftly in front of roughly 50 top AI engineers.

The CEO told the room that user addiction is "absolutely a non goal" for the company. He went a step further, remarking that the author behind that memo might "want to go work elsewhere."

Scout is built on top of the open-source OpenClaw project and debuted at Microsoft Build. It sits right at the center of Microsoft's commercial push to sell automation and agent tools to enterprise clients.

Why it matters

Nadella drew a much-needed boundary between enterprise utility and consumer social app tactics. Corporate clients pay for AI software to cut manual labor and save employee hours, not to see their workforce get hooked on another screen.

Applying attention-economy playbooks to workplace agents is fundamentally counterproductive. In our view, Nadella's harsh rebuke sends the right message to enterprise software teams: true productivity software should quietly finish the job and get out of the way, not trap users in endless conversational loops.
