Moderna goes all-in on ChatGPT Enterprise

Published Reach 38

Moderna just rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise across its thousands of employees, with staff building 750 custom GPTs in just two months. Use cases range from Dose ID—which analyzes clinical trial data to optimize vaccine dosages—to legal review bots. Why it matters: Moderna is betting that generative AI can allow a few thousand people to operate like a 100,000-person pharma giant, aiming to launch 15 new treatments in five years.

Traditional pharma giants usually need an army of 100,000 employees to juggle dozens of clinical drug pipelines at once.

Moderna wants to pull off that same feat with just a few thousand people. On April 24, the mRNA pioneer announced a deep partnership with OpenAI, rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise across its entire organization to redesign virtually every business workflow.

Skipping Copilot for Enterprise GPTs

Moderna didn’t jump straight into the deep end without testing the waters. Back in early 2023, the biotech firm built an internal bot called mChat using OpenAI’s API, reaching an impressive 80% company-wide adoption rate.

When official enterprise solutions started hitting the market, Moderna put mChat, Microsoft Copilot, and ChatGPT Enterprise through head-to-head internal user testing. ChatGPT Enterprise won decisively with net promoter scores that went through the roof, prompting leadership to go all-in.

To drive adoption, Moderna set a goal to make 100% of its digital workforce proficient with generative AI within six months. They ran company-wide prompt competitions, named 100 internal AI Champions, and spun up an internal community forum that now sees 2,000 active participants every week.

The rollout moved fast. Within just two months of launching ChatGPT Enterprise, Moderna employees had built 750 tailored GPTs across different departments. Roughly 40% of weekly active users created their own custom tools, and employees averaged 120 conversations per week with the platform.

From dose verification to translating biotech jargon

These custom GPTs are handling more than just casual drafts.

One flagship project is Dose ID, a specialized GPT pilot built for the clinical study team. Dose ID sifts through massive clinical datasets, creates customized data visualizations, and verifies optimal vaccine dosage choices against standardized criteria. It provides explicit rationales and source references so scientists can cross-examine the data from multiple angles before human researchers make final clinical calls.

Over in the legal department, adoption has already hit 100%. In-house lawyers rely on a Contract Companion GPT to generate clear, readable summaries of dense agreements, while a Policy Bot answers internal compliance questions in seconds.

Even the corporate communications team relies on tailored models to assemble quarterly earnings presentation slides and translate complex mRNA terminology into plain English for investors and the public.

Moderna’s leadership believes this technological leverage is essential to delivering up to 15 new products over the next five years, spanning from RSV vaccines to personalized cancer therapies.

Why it matters

Most enterprise AI deployments end up quietly abandoned, but Moderna is putting on a masterclass in change management.

Instead of treating ChatGPT as a glorified executive search bar, Moderna decentralized tool creation and let the rank-and-file solve their own day-to-day headaches. Letting clinical researchers build their own data validation assistants shows genuine operational trust. In our view, treating AI literacy as a mandatory cultural muscle rather than an IT checkbox is the smartest move any enterprise can make right now.

The real test, of course, lies in clinical rigor. Data analysis tools like Dose ID touch critical dosage decisions. Even though human experts lead every review, large language models still suffer from probabilistic quirks and occasional hallucinations. Guarding against automation bias among fatigued researchers will be an ongoing challenge that Moderna cannot afford to overlook.

For the broader pharmaceutical landscape, this signals a massive shift. Biotech innovation has historically scaled almost linearly with headcount and laboratory manpower. If Moderna successfully ships 15 new therapies in five years with a lean staff powered by custom agents, every legacy drugmaker will be forced to overhaul their pipeline economics.
