Midjourney drops Niji V6 for anime art
Midjourney just launched Niji V6, a new version of its latest model fine-tuned specifically for anime-style artwork. It brings vastly improved comprehension of intricate prompts, direct in-image text generation, and a Style Raw option, with inpainting and zoom tools slated to roll out in February.

Anime-style AI art has always had two stubborn bottlenecks: gibberish text on posters and an inability to follow complex, multi-layered prompts without confusing characters and backgrounds.
Midjourney rolled out Niji V6, the latest edition of its anime-tuned model built on top of the V6 architecture. Subscribers can start generating images right now by appending "--niji 6" to their prompts or toggling "Niji Model 6" inside the "/settings" menu across Midjourney bots.
Smarter prompt handling and actual readable text
The most noticeable upgrade in Niji V6 is how well it handles intricate descriptions. Instead of relying purely on comma-separated tag soup, the model can interpret detailed, natural-language prompts, making it far easier to convey subtle character traits and complex scenes.
It also brings Midjourney V6's text generation capabilities into the anime world. Users can now embed short phrases directly onto illustrations, a massive win for anyone mocking up manga covers, posters, or comic panels.
For those who want something less stylized than mainstream anime, the model supports the "Style Raw" parameter. Toggling it dials back the default aesthetic in favor of a more neutral, versatile visual output.
The current release is still phased. Midjourney plans a full launch in February, which will restore essential manipulation tools like Vary (Region) inpainting, Pan, and Zoom.
Why it matters
For digital illustrators, indie game devs, and anime creators, Niji V6 drastically lowers the friction of building production-ready assets. Being able to render readable titles directly onto stylized illustrations cuts out several steps in external editing software, and the improved prompt comprehension makes character concepts much more reliable.
Within the broader AI landscape, anime has historically been dominated by fine-tuned Stable Diffusion checkpoints and LoRA ecosystems. By pairing its industry-leading baseline architecture with dedicated anime tuning, Midjourney is mounting a serious challenge to open-source strongholds.
In our view, porting the flagship V6 text-rendering and semantic engines to the Niji branch is a very smart execution. However, the temporary lack of region-based editing and canvas expansion means creators are still mostly playing the prompt lottery until the February update fills those workflow gaps.
