Microsoft 365 Copilot gets reasoning agents for research and data analysis

Published Reach 39

Microsoft just introduced Researcher and Analyst, two new reasoning agents inside Microsoft 365 Copilot built for complex workplace tasks. Researcher pairs OpenAI's deep research model with company data to run multi-step market reviews, while Analyst taps o3-mini to execute Python code directly against messy spreadsheets. They roll out to Microsoft 365 Copilot license holders this April under a new Frontier early-access preview.

If you have ever spent a grueling Friday afternoon cross-referencing sales numbers across five messy spreadsheets or scouring old Teams chats to prep a market report, Microsoft is building something for you.

Microsoft introduced two new reasoning agents for Microsoft 365 Copilot: Researcher and Analyst. Instead of just answering quick questions, these tools are built to handle complex, multi-step knowledge work by tapping directly into your enterprise data.

The desk researcher and the data scientist

Researcher combines OpenAI's deep research model with Microsoft 365 Copilot's orchestration and deep search. It securely digs through your emails, meeting transcripts, files, and chats, while pulling fresh external data from the web.

It also hooks into third-party enterprise tools like Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Confluence. You can tell it to draft a go-to-market strategy for a new product, and it will blend public competitor trends with your internal pipeline data without you copy-pasting across tabs.

Analyst takes on the role of an in-house data analyst. Powered by OpenAI's o3-mini reasoning model and tuned for business data, it uses chain-of-thought logic to break down tricky queries.

Crucially, Analyst actually writes and runs Python code to crunch numbers. You can watch the code execute in real time and inspect its steps. It can take raw data scattered across several workbooks and churn out a revenue projection or customer behavior chart in minutes.

Autonomous agents hit general availability

Both Researcher and Analyst will begin rolling out in April to Microsoft 365 Copilot license holders through a new Frontier program, which gives enterprise users early access to tools still under active development.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is also pushing deeper into enterprise workflows with Copilot Studio. The company announced deep reasoning and agent flows in the studio, while making autonomous agent creation generally available.

That means businesses can now deploy bots that trigger on external events and automate multi-step operations on their own. IT administrators are expected to govern these agents and protect company data via the Copilot Control System.

Why it matters

We think packaging advanced reasoning models into specific work roles is a very smart pivot. Instead of handing employees a generic chat bubble and hoping they figure out prompt engineering, Microsoft gives them dedicated personas with clear boundaries.

For analysts and product managers, having Analyst show its Python code in real time solves a massive trust issue. You do not have to wonder if the model hallucinated the margin calculation; you can just inspect the script.

However, deep reasoning agents can be slow and computationally heavy. Gating them behind the new Frontier early-access program suggests Microsoft is still working through inference costs and latency. Still, by weaving OpenAI's o3-mini and deep research directly into SharePoint, Teams, and third-party CRMs, Microsoft is building an enterprise moat that will force competitors like Google Workspace to catch up on autonomous workflows.
