Microsoft turns Copilot into an enterprise agent hub
Microsoft just announced the Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 2 spring release, introducing an Agent Store alongside two reasoning agents, Researcher and Analyst. Powered by OpenAI deep reasoning models, the agents tackle complex multi-step research and data analysis, while updates also add cross-app search and audio-enabled notebooks. It signals Microsoft's aggressive push into human-agent collaboration.

Microsoft wants to promote you from an overworked office worker to an agent boss.
The tech giant officially rolled out its Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 2 spring release. Instead of just polishing emails or generating generic slideshows, the entire update is designed around human-agent collaboration, giving every desk worker a roster of specialized digital coworkers.
Deep reasoning enters the enterprise flow
The headline additions are Researcher and Analyst, two new reasoning agents powered by OpenAI's deep reasoning models. They are landing directly in Microsoft's newly launched Agent Store.
Researcher is designed for multi-step investigations that take hours of manual digging, returning structured findings with higher accuracy than standard chat assistants. Analyst functions like an on-demand data scientist, translating raw company spreadsheets into visual insights within minutes.
Both agents are rolling out immediately to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers enrolled in the Frontier early access program. The rest of the Wave 2 updates will begin rolling out in late May.
Alongside Microsoft's own tools, the new Agent Store also hosts third-party agents from platforms like Jira, Monday.com, and Miro, as well as internally built company agents.
Beyond office suites: search and memory
Microsoft also plugged several annoying gaps in daily enterprise workflows with this drop.
A new Copilot Search acts as a universal finder across corporate silos. Crucially, it doesn't just scan OneDrive, but connects directly to third-party data sources including Google Drive, ServiceNow, Confluence, and Jira.
Copilot is also gaining adaptive memory. It will now remember personal working styles, role details, and custom instructions over time, with private controls that allow users to purge sensitive records.
For content creation, the new Create tool brings GPT-4o image generation into business contexts, allowing teams to generate brand-aligned marketing banners, social assets, or turn presentations into video. Meanwhile, Copilot Notebooks lets workers bundle docs, web pages, and meeting notes together, complete with a feature that generates two-host podcast audio overviews of internal material.
To keep corporate security teams calm, Microsoft added Agent Management controls to the admin center, paired with Purview security posture tools and Viva Insights reporting to track actual ROI.
Why it matters
We think Microsoft's real masterstroke here is packaging reasoning models not as esoteric research milestones, but as named desk workers with distinct job descriptions.
For regular desk jockeys and knowledge workers, turning complex web research and raw data crunching into one-click delegation is genuinely useful today. If Researcher and Analyst deliver on their accuracy promises, they easily justify the enterprise Copilot seat cost by cutting out hours of grunt work. Connecting enterprise search across rival ecosystems like Google Drive and Atlassian is equally practical.
However, the real friction will be enterprise hygiene. An autonomous agent is only as good as the internal documentation it reads. If an organization has messy permissions or outdated Confluence pages, reasoning agents risk hallucinating based on faulty internal facts or surfacing sensitive data to the wrong staff.
For the broader AI sector, this release cements Microsoft's ambition to become the primary operating system for corporate work. By turning its app into the central storefront for both proprietary and third-party agents, Microsoft is putting massive pressure on standalone enterprise AI startups that lack an existing desktop footprint.
