Meta brings generative AI video editing to its apps
Meta just rolled out generative AI video editing across the Meta AI app, Meta.AI website, and Edits app. Users in the US and over a dozen countries can choose from over 50 preset prompts to transform 10 seconds of video into comic styles or video games for free. Meta says the tool was inspired by its Movie Gen research, with custom text prompts coming later this year.

Turning a gloomy phone clip into a retro comic book or a cyberpunk game cutscene usually requires hours of masking and color grading. Meta is now trying to do it in one tap.
Meta just rolled out its first generative AI video editing tools across the Meta AI mobile app, the Meta.AI web platform, and its Edits app. The rollout is currently available to users in the United States and more than a dozen other countries.
Preset prompts now, custom text later
The new feature focuses squarely on short-form creators. You can upload an existing clip and apply one of over 50 preset transformation prompts to modify a 10-second segment for free for a limited time.
These presets can transform a person's outfit, alter the environment, or overhaul the entire visual style. In Meta's examples, you can turn yourself into a vintage graphic novel character, transform a rainy Seattle clip into a glowing dreamscape with soft focus, or add battle gear and fluorescent game lighting.
Finished videos can be exported directly to Instagram and Facebook, or published into Meta AI's in-app Discover feed. However, you can only pick from the curated list of 50 presets for now. Meta says full text-based editing, allowing users to type their own custom instructions, will arrive later this year.
Moving Movie Gen into the real world
While the interface feels like an advanced filter gallery, the underlying engine comes directly from Meta's heavy-duty AI research.
Meta traces the lineage back to its Make-A-Scene models in 2022, which progressed into diffusion-based Llama image foundation models, and eventually culminated in last year's Movie Gen. Movie Gen was built to generate and edit high-fidelity video and synced audio from text, and this release marks its first commercial consumer application.
To make sure people actually use it, Meta collaborated with active creators to curate the initial prompt catalog, aiming to weave AI style transfers right into their daily editing routine inside the Edits app.
Why it matters
For everyday creators, this removes the technical ceiling for eye-catching visual effects. Turning a boring home clip into a stylized snippet takes virtually no effort, making it ideal for Instagram Reels hooks. The tradeoff is the tight 10-second ceiling and the lack of fine-grained control until custom prompts arrive.
For the AI landscape, Meta is taking a distinctly pragmatic route. While competitors like OpenAI have treated video generation primarily as a high-compute showcase with text-to-video models like Sora, Meta is embedding AI video editing directly where people already share clips. Transforming existing user footage into stylized shorts requires far less generation from scratch, which looks like a much more viable path for consumer scale.
The obvious risk is aesthetic exhaustion. When millions of creators use the same 50 presets, feeds will quickly drown in repetitive AI art styles. The real milestone won't be these initial templates, but whether Meta's upcoming custom text prompts can handle complex, nuanced edits without breaking video consistency.
