WordPress gets an in-editor writing partner with Jetpack AI Assistant

Published Reach 37

Jetpack just rolled out an AI Assistant directly inside the WordPress block editor. Powered by generative AI, it handles drafting posts, building tables, adjusting tone, and translating across 12 languages on command. Users get 20 free requests before the $10 monthly subscription kicks in, giving millions of bloggers native AI writing tools without tab-switching.

Anyone who writes on WordPress knows the drill: stare at a blank draft, open another tab for an AI chatbot, generate a draft, paste it back, and fix the broken formatting. Jetpack just decided to end that tab-switching dance.

Automattic's flagship plugin Jetpack launched Jetpack AI Assistant, embedding a generative AI writing assistant straight into the WordPress block editor across WordPress.com and self-hosted sites running Jetpack.

A collaborative co-author inside your editor

Getting started takes zero configuration. You just type "/ai" in any blank line or insert the AI Assistant block, and a conversational interface appears directly on your canvas.

You can prompt it to draft complete blog posts, detailed pages, bulleted lists, and structured tables. Instead of generic text blocks, the output fits right into the Gutenberg layout.

Beyond drafting, the tool doubles as an editor. You can tweak the tone of your draft on the fly, switching between humorous, confident, empathetic, formal, or casual conversational styles.

It also generates post titles, drafts summaries, and cleans up typos and grammar issues. For multilingual sites, the assistant can translate content across 12 languages, including Chinese, French, Spanish, and Hindi, allowing creators to write in their native language and publish in another.

Free trials and ten-dollar pricing

Jetpack is giving every user 20 free requests to test the waters. Once those run out, keeping the assistant active costs $10 per month.

For sites hosted on WordPress.com, the feature is temporarily free to use. Jetpack noted that the tool remains experimental, meaning feature sets and pricing could change down the road.

Why it matters

We think Jetpack's smartest move here is pure workflow integration.

There is no shortage of generative writing apps, but nearly all of them force you out of your CMS. Jumping between ChatGPT and WordPress creates friction, breaks layout blocks, and interrupts creative flow. Bringing AI inside Gutenberg removes the entire copy-paste tax.

For bloggers, solo marketers, and small publishers, $10 a month is an easy sell if it replaces a separate AI copywriting subscription while handling headline ideation, proofreading, and basic translation under one roof.

That said, the moat looks thin. As browser-level AI assistants and local models improve, paying a recurring fee for prompt-based text generation inside a block might feel steep unless Jetpack starts indexing a site's own historical archives to mimic true editorial voice.
