WordPress gets an AI editor to cut the fluff

Published Reach 35

Automattic just rolled out Write Brief with AI, a new built-in assistant for WordPress.com aimed at making blog posts crisper and easier to read. The tool scores your drafts across sentence length, complexity, and confidence, offering one-click suggestions to trim wordy phrases. It is currently available as a free beta for English content.

Writing a long blog post is easy, but making it crisp and concise is hard. Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, has launched an experimental AI tool designed specifically to cut the fluff.

The feature, called Write Brief with AI, helps bloggers make their existing posts clearer, tighter, and easier to digest.

An AI editor in your sidebar

Last year, Automattic rolled out a generative AI assistant for WordPress to draft posts from prompts and adjust tone. This new tool takes a different approach: instead of creating content from scratch, it acts as an editor for what you have already written.

The feature is available in beta as part of Jetpack. For now, it is free and accessible via the Jetpack icon in the top right corner of the WordPress.com post editor.

If you get too wordy, the tool flags the sentence and offers a Suggest button that automatically tightens the phrasing.

It also monitors your tone. If you lean too heavily on hesitant filler words like "possibly," or use needlessly complex vocabulary that might alienate casual readers, it nudges you to fix it.

On the side of the screen, writers get a live readability score based on three specific metrics: sentence length, complexity, and confidence.

Born from a hack week

According to Automattic senior product designer Noam Almosnino, Write Brief with AI started as an internal hack week experiment. The company decided to release it publicly after seeing how quickly employees adopted and loved it.

There are a few catches during this initial rollout.

While Jetpack is widely used across self-hosted WordPress sites, Write Brief with AI is currently limited to sites hosted directly on WordPress.com.

Language support is also narrow. While Automattic's earlier generative AI tool supports a dozen languages, Write Brief with AI is English-only for now.

Why it matters

If you publish blogs or product updates in English on WordPress.com, this tool is worth enabling right away. It saves you the friction of copying drafts back and forth into ChatGPT just to ask for tighter edits.

Across the industry, this highlights a smart pivot from generative AI to assistive editorial AI. Instead of flooding the web with more machine-generated paragraphs, Automattic is using models to make human writing punchier.

We think embedding this directly into the native block editor gives Automattic a massive distribution advantage over standalone writing apps. That said, keeping it locked to WordPress.com and English limits its reach. Self-hosted WordPress powers a massive portion of the open web, and until this capability reaches the broader self-hosted ecosystem, its real impact will remain constrained.
