Google Sheets just added an =AI formula powered by Gemini
Google just integrated Gemini directly into Sheets with a new =AI function. Users can simply type the formula alongside a natural-language prompt into any cell to categorize feedback, summarize reviews, or generate personalized copy across hundreds of rows without touching complex scripts.

Sorting through hundreds of customer reviews or support tickets in a spreadsheet has always been a slog, usually requiring custom scripts or sheer brute force.
Google just introduced a dead-simple alternative inside Google Sheets: a native `=AI` function powered by Gemini.
A formula for messy text
Using it is as straightforward as writing any standard spreadsheet formula. You just type `=AI` into a cell followed by your natural language prompt for Gemini.
Gemini then applies that instruction across whatever range of cells you specify. It can categorize sprawling user feedback, summarize product reviews into quick bullet points, or generate personalized copy row by row without requiring external add-ons or advanced spreadsheet skills.
Why it matters
Turning an LLM into an inline cell function is way more practical than sticking another AI chatbot in the sidebar. Until now, pulling AI into Google Sheets usually meant messing with Apps Script, API keys, or third-party extensions. Putting it behind a standard `=AI` syntax lowers the barrier to entry for anyone who knows how to drag a formula down a column.
That said, running prompts at scale inside a spreadsheet comes with risks. LLM outputs are inherently variable, so if you drag an `=AI` formula across 500 rows, a slightly vague instruction could easily lead to inconsistent categorization. It looks like a huge time-saver for first-pass triage and drafting, but you will definitely still need a human to double-check the final data.
