Google rolls out AI Mode in UK Search powered by Gemini 2.5
Google just launched AI Mode for Search in the UK, designed to tackle messy, multi-part queries that usually take multiple searches. Powered by a custom Gemini 2.5 model, it breaks down your prompt into subtopics and fires off multiple searches simultaneously using query fan-out. It works with text, voice, and camera inputs, showing up as a dedicated tab on web and mobile.

For decades, we’ve been trained to talk to Google like broken robots, stripping our thoughts down into awkward strings of keywords.
Google rolled out AI Mode in the UK, aiming to change that habit entirely. The new feature is now appearing as a dedicated tab on Search results pages, as well as inside the Google app on iOS and Android.
Smarter searches through query fan-out
Powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5, AI Mode is built specifically for open-ended, multi-layered research that previously required opening a dozen different tabs.
According to Google, early adopters are already asking prompts two to three times longer than traditional queries. Instead of searching piecemeal for restaurants, gig venues, and quiet spots, you can paste an entire paragraph describing your dream weekend trip and let the engine sort it out.
Under the hood, Google uses a technique called query fan-out. The system breaks down your complex prompt into multiple subtopics and fires off a batch of simultaneous searches across the web, digging up relevant niche pages on your behalf.
You are not limited to text either. AI Mode natively supports voice input and camera uploads, letting you snap a picture and ask follow-up questions on the fly.
Knowing when to shut up
To counter hallucination risks, Google says AI Mode is anchored directly to its core web ranking and quality infrastructure.
Crucially, when the system lacks high confidence in an AI-generated answer, it will gracefully fall back to standard web search results instead of bluffing. Google also stressed that AI-driven overviews drive higher-quality clicks to publishers, claiming users spend more time on external sites once they click through.
Why it matters
For everyday users, AI Mode turns Google into a research assistant that actually handles the legwork of cross-referencing information. If you frequently plan trips, compare technical products, or troubleshoot projects, this is worth testing immediately.
For the search industry, this is Google's calculated answer to challengers like Perplexity. By boxing the experience into a distinct tab rather than replacing standard search overnight, Google preserves its cash-cow ad layout while satisfying power users who want conversational depth.
We think the fan-out architecture is a very smart compromise. It positions the LLM as an orchestrator rather than a solo encyclopedia, leveraging Google’s unmatched crawl index to keep answers factual.
However, the tension with web publishers remains unresolved. No matter how much Google talks up click quality, providing comprehensive answers upfront inevitably eats into referral traffic, and this feature will only intensify that friction over time.
