Google Photos lets you virtually try on clothes you already own

Google just announced an AI-powered wardrobe feature for Google Photos that turns your camera roll into a digital closet. The tool scans photos of you, cuts out individual garments, and lets you mix, match, and virtually try on new outfits with clothes you already own. It rolls out to Android later this summer before heading to iOS.

Google Photos is turning your old camera roll into a digital closet you can actually wear.

Google announced a new AI-powered wardrobe feature inside Google Photos that scans your existing picture library, identifies clothing items you have worn in the past, and automatically organizes them into a virtual closet.

Digging up forgotten fits

Instead of making you manually upload and tag every shirt in your room, the AI combs through past snapshots and sorts detected items by category, including tops, bottoms, skirts, dresses, shoes, and jewelry.

You can pull up forgotten pieces buried in the back of your closet and mix and match them to build new outfits. The app lets you save these combinations to digital moodboards tailored for specific events, like summer weddings, work weeks, or vacations, and share the looks directly with friends.

There is also a dedicated button in the bottom right corner of each outfit card. Tapping it lets you virtually try on the generated combination on your own image before pulling anything off a hanger.

While Google rolled out an AI virtual try-on tool in Search last year, that system was built strictly for shopping new catalog items. This new tool focuses entirely on clothing you already own. Google says the wardrobe feature will arrive on Android devices later this summer, with iOS support following after.

Why it matters

Digital wardrobe apps have been around for years, but almost everyone abandons them because photographing and cataloging an entire real-world closet is painful busywork. Google solves the onboarding bottleneck completely by using photos you already took.

For users, this means free daily styling utility without buying new subscriptions or spending an entire weekend scanning shirts. It takes AI image recognition beyond passive gallery search and turns it into an active daily utility.

We think shifting the focus from buying new clothes to restyling existing wardrobes is a remarkably smart consumer move. The big technical hurdle will be fidelity: casual snapshots feature messy wrinkles, partial occlusion, and unpredictable lighting. If the extracted clothing and virtual try-ons look unnatural, novelty will fade fast. But if the segmentation holds up, Google just gave millions of people a genuine reason to open their photos app every single morning.
