Google Photos unlocks Pixel AI tools for everyone

Published Reach 37

Google just revamped the Google Photos editor for its 10th anniversary, bringing former Pixel exclusives to all users. Features like Reimagine (text-to-edit backgrounds) and Auto Frame (AI outpainting and cropping) will start rolling out globally on Android next month, with iOS following later this year.

Google is turning 10 years old with Google Photos, and it is celebrating by giving away features that used to be exclusive to Pixel hardware.

The app just received a major editor redesign, officially bringing two of Google's flagship AI features, Reimagine and Auto Frame, to the broader mobile world.

Pixel features go wide

Reimagine lets you transform objects and backgrounds using simple text prompts, turning a gloomy gray afternoon into clear blue skies in seconds.

Auto Frame helps rescue awkward compositions by suggesting different crops, widening the shot, or using generative AI to fill in empty edges.

The refreshed interface also introduces AI Enhance, which combines multiple edits like sharpening and object removal into a single tap, while context-aware suggestions pop up when you tap specific areas of an image.

Google also added QR code album sharing, letting party hosts print a code so anyone in the room can quickly view and drop in their own shots.

The rollout kicks off globally next month for Android devices, while iOS users will get it later this year.

Why it matters

We think this move shows Google realizing that gatekeeping AI camera tricks to its own hardware is a losing game. The real moat now is user engagement across billions of devices.

For everyday smartphone owners, it means you do not need to buy a Pixel to rescue ruined vacation photos with generative fill. By putting complex generative editing behind single-tap suggestions, Google is making advanced photo manipulation effortless, though it raises the usual question of how much reality we actually want left in our family memories.
