Google brings AI image editing straight into Workspace with Pics

Published Reach 40

Google just launched Pics, a new AI image creation and editing tool powered by its Nano Banana model. Users can isolate objects for targeted tweaks, edit or translate in-image text without breaking fonts, and collaborate in real time. It is live now at pics.new and baked directly into Google Docs and Slides, with Drive support rolling out soon.

If you have ever tried editing an image for a presentation, you know the pain: you just want to fix a typo or swap out a coffee mug, but tweaking the prompt forces the AI model to redraw the entire thing from scratch.

Google is tackling that exact headache with Google Pics, a new image creation and editing tool powered by its Nano Banana model.

Rolling out over the coming weeks to all Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers alongside most Workspace business accounts, Pics lives as a standalone web app at pics.new and integrates directly into Google Docs and Google Slides today, with Google Drive support coming shortly.

Precise edits instead of rolling the dice

Instead of treating every edit like a fresh prompt, Google Pics is built around granular control and document workflows.

Its object segmentation feature lets you isolate a specific item in an image and modify it without disturbing the rest of the canvas. You can even drop text comments directly on designated spots to request targeted adjustments and fire off multiple tweaks at once.

Another huge win is in-image text editing and translation. You can rewrite or translate text sitting inside a graphic without breaking the layout or altering the original font style.

Rounding out the toolset, Pics generates several variations per prompt so you can pick the best result, and it brings Workspace-style multiplayer collaboration to image creation, letting teammates edit the same visual together in real time.

Why it matters

We think Google Pics is one of the smartest product integrations Google has shipped recently because it prioritizes utility over pure novelty.

For knowledge workers, marketing teams, and presentation builders, the value is immediate. You no longer have to export assets into Canva or Photoshop just to translate a diagram or remove an unwanted prop. Being able to change text directly inside an image while preserving the font saves serious time, and embedding this right inside Docs and Slides removes tab-switching friction entirely.

This puts direct pressure on design suites that rely on light visual edits as their wedge into corporate teams. When enterprise users can do collaborative, localized asset tweaking natively inside the document suite they are already paying for, the case for third-party subscriptions gets a lot thinner.

That said, access remains tightly gated behind Google AI Pro, Ultra, and Workspace business tiers for now, meaning casual and free-tier users will have to wait on the sidelines.
