Google gives Gemini an agentic research upgrade

Published Reach 44

Google just rolled out Deep Research for Gemini Advanced users, turning the assistant into an autonomous research partner. It creates a multi-step search plan, browses the web across several passes, and compiles findings into a clean report with source links. Plus, a speedy experimental preview of Gemini 2.0 Flash is now open to all Gemini users on the web.

If you have ever spent an entire afternoon juggling thirty open browser tabs just to compile a basic briefing document, Google has some good news.

Google rolled out Deep Research, a new agentic tool inside Gemini Advanced designed to handle complex web investigations on your behalf. Alongside it, Google also opened up public access to Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental for all users.

An AI that browses like a human analyst

Deep Research is built for high-effort inquiries that go way beyond simple search queries.

Instead of spitting out an instant paragraph, the tool first creates a multi-step research plan based on your prompt. You can review and tweak the plan before hitting approve. Once given the green light, Gemini takes over the browser.

Over several minutes, it conducts searches, scans relevant web pages, extracts key points, and launches follow-up queries based on what it just learned. It repeats this loop across the open web, synthesizes the findings into an organized report with source links, and lets you export the entire brief directly into Google Docs. If anything looks incomplete, you can keep chatting to drill deeper.

Google says this agent taps into its proprietary search expertise, reasoning systems, and Gemini's massive 1M token context window. The company envisions use cases like startup founders comparing competitors and locations, or researchers breaking down trends in autonomous vehicle sensors.

Deep Research is rolling out now in English for Gemini Advanced subscribers on desktop and mobile web under the model toggle "Gemini 1.5 Pro with Deep Research." Mobile apps and Workspace accounts will follow in early 2025.

Gemini 2.0 Flash goes live for everyone

At the same time, Google introduced its Gemini 2.0 model generation and made a chat-optimized Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental available to all Gemini users on the web.

Google claims the lightweight preview brings noticeable speed jumps alongside stronger performance on several key benchmarks. Because it is an experimental preview, Google cautioned that some standard Gemini features might not be compatible yet, with mobile app integration coming soon.

Why it matters

We think Deep Research marks a critical pivot from passive chatbots to active, goal-driven agents.

For everyday users, market analysts, and students, this is an immediate time-saver. Asking an AI for research used to yield shallow summaries built on a single search pass. By turning the process into an autonomous loop of reading, searching again, and citing sources in a clean doc, Google turns Gemini into a functional junior research associate. Even with human verification still required, cutting hours of raw googling down to minutes makes a compelling case for Gemini Advanced.

For the broader industry, Google is putting serious pressure on specialized AI search engines. By pairing its native search infrastructure with an enormous 1M token context, Google has an inherent advantage in gathering and structuring wide swaths of the web inside one workspace.

The real test will be accuracy and agent drift. If an autonomous model latches onto low-quality sources during its multi-step search loop, bad information will compound throughout the final report. Still, focusing agent capabilities on tedious, structured desk research is one of the smartest and most practical bets Google has made so far.
