Coinbase lets AI agents trade with your money

Published Reach 40

Coinbase just launched Coinbase for Agents, a tool that connects AI agents directly to user accounts to autonomously trade and make payments within custom limits. Available via MCP for ChatGPT and Claude or a CLI for developer terminals, it currently supports crypto spot and derivatives. Giving AI agents direct, bounded access to real capital marks a major milestone for autonomous finance.

For the past two years, people have been using ChatGPT and Claude to research crypto, analyze charts, and sanity-check investment theses.

Then came the boring part: manually copying numbers over to an exchange and placing the trade yourself. LLMs couldn’t see your real portfolio, and they certainly couldn’t touch your money.

Coinbase just changed that by launching Coinbase for Agents, a dedicated tool that connects AI agents straight to your Coinbase account to trade, pay, and execute workflows autonomously.

A prepaid gift card for your AI

The integration is live today in two flavors: as an MCP server for web-based setups like Claude and ChatGPT, and as a CLI for terminal environments like Claude Code.

Right out of the gate, it supports crypto spot and derivatives trading. You can tell your agent to gradually rebalance into a specific allocation over months, or have it pull 30 days of hourly data to dollar-cost average into ETH whenever prices historically dip.

Handing your portfolio over to an AI agent sounds terrifying, which is why Coinbase built guardrails from day one. Instead of handing over the keys to your entire balance, you can spin up an isolated sub-portfolio.

Coinbase describes it like handing the AI a gift card with a preset spending limit rather than signing over your bank account. You decide the maximum trade size, what assets it can touch, and how much it can spend.

Compliance checks and KYT monitoring are wired in natively. Coinbase also plans to add stocks, index funds, prediction markets, and commodities, alongside x402 protocol integration so agents can buy their own data and compute.

For non-technical users, there is also Coinbase Advisor, an AI financial advisor built directly into the mobile app and registered with both the SEC and CFTC.

Why it matters

We think this is the clearest sign yet that financial interfaces are shifting away from traditional apps and directly into agent prompts.

For crypto users and retail traders, it lowers sophisticated quantitative strategies—like rule-based dip buying and automated cash management—down to everyday conversational language. Still, if you want to test it today, we’d recommend keeping it inside a tiny isolated wallet with throwaway cash until LLM reliability under volatile market conditions is proven.

Strategically, Coinbase is playing a very smart long game. It started with AgentKit in 2024 to give bots wallets, launched the x402 payment standard last year, and is now embedding its order books directly into tools like Claude.

If everyday interactions increasingly happen inside AI interfaces, standalone exchange apps risk becoming ghost towns. By turning itself into the default financial backend for AI agents, Coinbase guarantees its own liquidity stays relevant, no matter which model dominates your desktop.
