Coinbase lets you build an onchain AI agent in 3 minutes
Coinbase just launched Based Agent, a template that lets users build their own AI agent equipped with a crypto wallet in under three minutes. Built alongside OpenAI and Replit, the agent can autonomously execute trades, token swaps, and staking via smart contracts. Basically, Coinbase wants to make giving an AI bot its own bank account effortless.

Giving an AI agent a credit card usually gets your account flagged by a bank in seconds. But on a blockchain, code doesn't care if you're a human with a pulse or a language model running in a cloud container.
Coinbase developer Lincoln Murr introduced Based Agent, a starter template that lets anyone spin up an autonomous AI agent with its own crypto wallet in under three minutes.
Once live, these bots can interact with smart contracts, execute token swaps, handle staking, and even register their own Base Name web3 domains.
Three minutes and three keys
The setup is basically a plug-and-play workflow. Coinbase wired up its own developer SDK with OpenAI's models and hosted the whole environment on Replit.
To get one running, you just grab an API key from the Coinbase developer program, plug in an OpenAI key, and fork the template on Replit. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong quickly blasted the project to his 1.3 million followers on X, pitching it as the easiest path yet to building onchain bots.
This isn't an isolated experiment. Just days earlier, Armstrong publicly tweeted at Truth Terminal, the breakout AI bot on X, asking if it wanted an independent wallet not controlled by its human creator. Back in August, Armstrong also oversaw a transaction where two AI bots autonomously paid each other in crypto tokens.
Jesse Pollak, the creator of Base, recently pointed to Luna, an AI agent that began autonomously tipping users on X to drive engagement on its posts. Meanwhile, Mode Network founder James Ross predicted that over 80% of all blockchain transactions could be driven by AI agents as soon as April 2025.
Why it matters
Giving software its own balance sheet is one of the most practical intersections of crypto and AI we've seen so far. Traditional rails like Stripe and Visa still require human identity verification, which cuts autonomous software off from doing real-world commerce. Blockchains only care about private keys, making crypto the natural native currency for machines.
Coinbase is playing this smartly. By lowering the setup friction to a three-minute fork, it positions its developer tools and the Base ecosystem as the default home for automated web3 bots.
That said, giving an LLM access to real capital is terrifying. Between prompt injections and model hallucinations, letting a bot execute swaps autonomously is a great way to drain a wallet if guardrails fail. It is absolutely worth playing with in a sandbox today, but you probably shouldn't fund these bots with more than you are comfortable losing to a software glitch.
