Claude just passed ChatGPT with marketers

Published Reach 40

Social Media Examiner's 2026 report reveals that 73% of marketers now use AI daily, up from 37% two years ago. Most notably, Claude has surged from an 18% user base to 65% and unseated ChatGPT as marketers' most important platform (42% vs. 39%). Meanwhile, 53% of marketers are now paying for AI tools out of their own pockets.

Two years ago, marketers were still debating whether AI even belonged in their daily workflow. That debate is officially dead, but the crown has quietly shifted—and the tool dominating professional desks is no longer the one that started the revolution.

Social Media Examiner just released its 2026 AI Marketing Industry Report, surveying 681 marketers to track trends over the last three years. The headline number: 73% of marketers now use AI daily, nearly doubling from 37% in 2024. But the real story is how marketers have completely shuffled their toolkit.

Claude overtakes ChatGPT as marketers' top pick

While ChatGPT remains the most widespread tool at 81% adoption, it has slid from its 2025 peak of 90%. Meanwhile, Anthropic's Claude pulled off an astonishing run, tripling its adoption from 18% in 2024 to 65% today. Google Gemini also nearly doubled to 60%, while Microsoft Copilot stayed flat around 26%.

The seismic shift happened when marketers were asked to name their single most important platform. Claude took the #1 spot at 42%, edging out ChatGPT at 39%. Back in 2024, ChatGPT crushed Claude in this category 68% to 5%.

Tenure explains the divide. Beginners still cluster around ChatGPT, but among marketers with three or more years of AI experience, 76% use Claude. Furthermore, 68% of marketers say Claude is the top platform they want to learn more about, compared to just 44% for ChatGPT.

Marketers are paying their own way

Underneath the rapid adoption lies a messy corporate reality: marketers are largely teaching themselves and footing their own bills.

Only 7% of marketers receive company-provided training, while 85% learn by experimenting on their own. Over half (53%) pay for AI subscriptions out of their own pockets. At the same time, 86% say AI saves time and boosts productivity, yet only 30% can point to significant, measurable business results.

Anxieties are also climbing. Data privacy concerns surged from 67% to 77% over two years, virtually tying accuracy worries at 78%. Marketers no longer just wonder if the model gets the facts straight; they worry where their company data is heading.

Why it matters

Claude beating ChatGPT in primary platform preference is a massive wake-up call for OpenAI. It proves that first-mover advantage and consumer brand recognition are not enough to lock in professional operators. Marketers, especially in B2B where Claude leads 48% to 30%, clearly prefer Claude's nuanced writing style, superior reasoning, and expansive context handling for real work.

If you are a marketer or agency operator still relying solely on default ChatGPT prompts, it is officially time to run your daily workflows through Claude. You are likely missing out on cleaner copy and less robotic outputs.

However, the wild west nature of this adoption is a ticking compliance bomb. When more than half of staff pay for their own tools and 77% worry about data privacy, sensitive corporate data is inevitably leaking into shadow AI setups. Enterprises need to stop passively encouraging AI and start funding structured, secure corporate seats before regulators or data breaches catch up.
