Claude lands inside Microsoft Foundry and Excel

Published Reach 57

Anthropic just expanded its partnership with Microsoft, bringing Claude Sonnet 4.5, Haiku 4.5, and Opus 4.1 to Microsoft Foundry in public preview. Azure enterprise customers can deploy Claude through existing Azure agreements, while Excel's Agent Mode now lets users tap Claude to build spreadsheets and generate formulas. It removes procurement hurdles for teams wanting frontier reasoning inside Microsoft's ecosystem.

If you work at an enterprise, getting access to a new AI model is usually a procurement nightmare. Legal wants to review the vendor, finance hates managing separate billing, and weeks slip by before anyone writes a single line of code.

Anthropic and Microsoft tore down that wall. The two companies expanded their strategic partnership, bringing Claude Sonnet 4.5, Haiku 4.5, and Opus 4.1 into Microsoft Foundry in public preview. At the same time, Microsoft quietly added Claude into Excel's Agent Mode preview.

That means enterprise teams can finally run Claude without signing a new vendor deal. It simply bills against your existing Azure contract.

From code agents to Excel spreadsheets

Microsoft Foundry users can now spin up Claude models through a serverless setup, leaving infrastructure management to Anthropic. The integration supports standard API pricing and works directly with Python, TypeScript, and C# SDKs, authenticating via Microsoft Entra.

Crucially, enterprise spend counts toward the Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC). Teams with pre-allocated Azure budgets can start routing workloads to Claude immediately.

Developers also get native platform features inside Foundry, including tool use, web search and fetch, citations, vision, code execution, and prompt caching.

Meanwhile, everyday office workers are getting a direct upgrade. While Claude already powers the multi-step Researcher agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot, Excel's Agent Mode now lets users pick Claude to build spreadsheets, write formulas, debug broken models, and analyze datasets directly inside the workbook.

A $30 billion compute pact across three clouds

There is a massive hardware deal sitting underneath this software announcement. Anthropic has committed to purchase $30 billion in Azure compute capacity, securing up to one gigawatt of compute power built on NVIDIA Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems.

To cement the alliance, NVIDIA and Microsoft committed to invest up to $10 billion and up to $5 billion, respectively, into Anthropic.

This move officially makes Claude the only frontier model available across all three hyperscale cloud platforms: Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.

Why it matters

For enterprise teams, this removes the single biggest roadblock to adopting Claude: corporate red tape. If your company already runs on Azure, you can deploy the world's leading coding model today without an extra billing review. And having Claude inside Excel is a dream for analysts who spend their days untangling nested formulas.

For the broader industry, it shows Microsoft doubling down on model agnosticism. OpenAI is no longer the exclusive star of the Redmond show. Satya Nadella's priority is clearly keeping compute workloads on Azure, regardless of whose logo sits on the model.

We think Anthropic played this masterfully. Instead of being locked into AWS or Google, Dario Amodei's team now pulls revenue and compute from every major cloud vendor on earth. The challenge will be keeping all three tech giants happy without getting squeezed by their competing agendas.
