ChatGPT for Mac is now free for everyone

Published Reach 64

OpenAI just opened its macOS desktop app to all users, expanding beyond early Plus subscribers. Mac users can now hit Option + Space to pull up a Spotlight-style chat interface, take instant screenshots to ask questions, upload files, and talk directly from the desktop. It is a huge leap toward making AI a native part of everyday computer workflows.

If you use a Mac, your muscle memory probably relies on Command + Space to bring up Spotlight. OpenAI just went after the button right next to it.

OpenAI announced on X that its official ChatGPT desktop app for macOS is now available to all users. Previously limited to paid Plus subscribers, the native app is now open to free tier users as well.

There is a catch regarding hardware. You need an Apple Silicon Mac powered by M-series chips running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Windows users will have to keep waiting, as their version is scheduled for later this year.

A Spotlight-style floating assistant

The marquee feature of the Mac client is how it integrates into your workflow. Hitting Option + Space pops up a floating chat bar right over your screen, mimicking the system Spotlight experience.

It is far more than a simple web wrapper. The app lets you snap a screenshot of a specific window or your full desktop to ask questions immediately, which is handy for reviewing code or analyzing charts.

You can also drag and drop files, search past chats, and switch between GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4o. Custom GPTs and DALL-E image generation are also fully supported.

A headphone icon in the bottom corner launches standard Voice Mode from the desktop. OpenAI noted that the advanced voice mode with real-time audio and video capabilities from GPT-4o will arrive in the coming weeks.

However, as Ars Technica highlighted, the app does not support custom API keys. If you prefer paying per token rather than relying on OpenAI consumer tiers, you still need third-party utilities like MacGPT.

Why it matters

We think OpenAI made a very smart move by drastically lowering the friction of using AI at a desk.

Switching back and forth between browser tabs and copying text has always been a subtle productivity killer. Replacing that with a system-wide shortcut and quick screen capture makes ChatGPT an instinctive tool for developers and writers, and it is well worth downloading right away.

Strategically, this is OpenAI securing its own real estate before Apple Intelligence rolls out this fall. While Apple announced deep ChatGPT integrations for Siri and Writing Tools at WWDC, this native app establishes user habits months ahead of Apple's OS updates. It poses an immediate existential threat to third-party Mac wrapper apps.

The main drawback is exclusion, since Intel Mac owners are left out entirely. Moreover, having an AI that effortlessly ingests screenshots and clipboards is already raising eyebrows among IT admins, prompting companies to look into MDM controls to prevent sensitive data leaks.
