The ChatGPT Mac app turns Option + Space into an AI assistant
OpenAI just rolled out its ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, bringing a system-wide floating prompt right to your fingertips. Tapping Option + Space bar pulls up a text bar over any active window, making it dead simple to look up terms, draft copy, or switch to GPT-4o without opening a browser. It is currently available to Plus subscribers on computers running macOS 14 with Apple Silicon chips, with Windows support coming later this year.

OpenAI just brought ChatGPT directly to the Mac desktop, with a Windows version slated for later this year.
The launch arrived alongside the debut of GPT-4o, though early access is currently limited. To run the new app, you need an active ChatGPT Plus subscription, a Mac powered by Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), and macOS 14 or later.
Spotlight, but for ChatGPT
The app is not listed on the Mac App Store yet. Searching there only pulls up third-party clones. Instead, eligible Plus subscribers get a download prompt directly upon logging into the ChatGPT web interface.
Once installed, the real headline feature is a simple keyboard shortcut: Option + Space.
Much like the native macOS Command + Space shortcut for Spotlight search, pressing Option + Space brings up a clean text bar over whatever application you are currently using. You type a prompt, hit Enter, and ChatGPT pops up with the answer.
Whether you are hunting for a quick synonym while drafting an email or pulling a definition while reading a PDF, the overlay lets you query the model without leaving your active window. The only catch is that the shortcut stops working if you completely quit the app.
Desktop parity with one big omission
Feature-wise, the desktop app matches the web experience with a more streamlined look. The sidebar is hidden by default, but users can still switch seamlessly between GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4o.
You can upload local files, drop in screenshots, generate images, and hold standard voice chats.
However, the hyper-realistic, low-latency Voice Mode demonstrated during OpenAI’s Spring Update is not here yet. OpenAI says that advanced voice capability will roll out in an alpha preview to Plus subscribers over the coming weeks before eventually reaching everyone.
Why it matters
We think the move from a browser tab to an OS-level hotkey is quietly one of OpenAI's smartest product plays yet.
For daily knowledge workers, context switching is the ultimate friction. Having an AI prompt float on top of any active window turns ChatGPT into an ambient operating layer rather than a destination website you have to remember to visit. It is significantly faster than jury-rigged Siri shortcuts or browser bookmarklets.
The downside is accessibility. Limiting the initial rollout to Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 behind a $20 monthly paywall leaves the vast majority of PC users and older Mac owners on the sidelines. If you already pay for Plus and own a compatible Mac, it is an immediate productivity win; otherwise, you are better off waiting until it expands to Windows and the free tier.
