ChatGPT ads arrive in 31 European countries
OpenAI just expanded ChatGPT Ads to 31 European markets including Germany, France, and Spain, marking its biggest ad rollout yet. Sponsored placements only appear for users on the Free and Go tiers, leaving paid Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers completely ad-free. European marketers can now launch self-service campaigns directly via Ads Manager.

It was only a matter of time before OpenAI started looking a lot more like a classic ad giant.
Six months after kicking off an ad pilot in the US back in February, OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Ads across 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Austria. It marks the company's biggest commercial expansion to date.
While access originally opened through agency partners and internal sales teams, OpenAI enabled self-service onboarding through its Ads Manager for all 31 European markets by the end of August.
Who gets ads and what marketers can buy
If you pay for your subscription, you are safe for now.
OpenAI confirmed that ads will only appear to users on the Free and Go tiers. Subscribers on Plus, Pro, and Enterprise accounts will remain completely ad-free.
To head off privacy pushback, OpenAI insists that user chats remain strictly confidential, ad targeting does not rely on selling personal data, and sponsored results are clearly labeled and physically separated from AI-generated answers. Advertisers are not allowed to influence ChatGPT's organic output.
Behind the curtain, the ad stack looks remarkably mature for a six-month-old platform. Tens of thousands of marketers have already run campaigns.
The system now supports conversion optimization alongside standard CPM and CPC bidding, plus geo-targeting and custom audiences. OpenAI has also rolled out its own OpenAI Pixel, a Conversions API, and third-party attribution hooks so brands can track real-world sales.
Why it matters
For regular users, the era of frictionless, completely free high-end AI without commercial baggage is effectively wrapping up. If you use ChatGPT to research a product or plan a vacation on a free tier, you will see sponsors bidding on your decision-making process. The only reliable escape hatch is paying up for Plus.
For the digital ad industry, this is a direct shot across the bow for Google Search. Traditional search engines capture keywords; ChatGPT captures context, constraints, and full intent. Reaching people at the exact moment they are evaluating options makes conversational real estate uniquely valuable.
We think OpenAI is doing what it fundamentally had to do: compute is expensive, and subscription revenue alone cannot fund consumer-scale inference indefinitely. However, rolling this out across Europe is a high-wire act. European regulators will scrutinize how consent, tracking, and ad delivery interact under strict privacy laws. If users ever start suspecting that an AI recommendation was secretly influenced by an ad spend, OpenAI risks burning the very trust that made ChatGPT indispensable.
