Character.AI turns bot makers into real creators

Published Reach 34

Character.AI just introduced a new suite of features designed specifically for character builders, including a performance dashboard called Creator Insights, a Creator Guide, mobile creation updates, and leaderboards. A dedicated Following tab and new character notifications are also rolling out soon. The move turns the platform from a bot directory into a true creator-first community.

Most people spend hours chatting with bots on Character.ai without ever thinking about who actually built them. For years, the platform treated its millions of conversational bots almost like autonomous phenomena, leaving the people writing the prompts, refining the backstories, and testing the quirks largely invisible.

Character.ai is rolling out a suite of creator-focused features designed to fix that dynamic, giving bot builders proper tools to refine their work, track analytics, and build actual followings.

Better mobile tools and proper analytics

Building a memorable persona takes endless tweaking. To help with that, the company launched a comprehensive Creator Guide covering best practices, especially tailored to its newer conversational styles like PipSqueak 2 and DeepSqueak.

The mobile creation workflow also got a refresh. Creators can now create, edit, and organize their characters directly on mobile, including the ability to add and tweak character tags without jumping to desktop.

Just as important is knowing what actually lands. The new Creator Insights dashboard gives builders access to real performance metrics, including total interactions, follower counts, likes, discovery sources, and a breakdown of their top-performing characters, along with automated tips for improvements.

From finding a bot to following an author

Character.ai has always been great at helping users stumble into individual bots, but terrible at helping them keep up with the minds behind them. That gap is closing with an upcoming Creator Following tab, giving users a dedicated hub to browse everything published by creators they follow.

Followers will also soon receive push notifications whenever a followed creator drops a new persona, turning one-off visits into continuous engagement.

To highlight the community, Character.ai rolled out official Creator Leaderboards. The rankings split into Top Creators, who consistently drive weekly returning traffic, and Rising Creators, spotlighting newcomers gaining fast traction through engagement and fresh releases.

Why it matters

For bot creators, this update finally provides professional hygiene. Operating blindly without audience insights or retention mechanisms made character building feel like thankless labor. Now, with clear discovery data, notification loops, and dedicated following hubs, serious worldbuilders have genuine incentives to treat persona design as an ongoing creative pursuit.

For the broader AI entertainment space, it signals a shift from raw model capability to community retention. Any lab can provide a capable conversational engine, but the creative nuance required to make a bot feel alive comes from dedicated human prompters.

We think Character.ai is smart to transform itself from a faceless bot directory into a creator network akin to YouTube or Substack for interactive fiction. Cultivating recognizable personalities behind the bots deepens platform loyalty. However, recognition and leaderboards only go so far. Without a clear path to direct monetization or revenue sharing, Character.ai still risks burning out its most prolific creative minds once the initial novelty of leaderboards wears off.
