Black Forest Labs launches FLUX Pro finetuning API

Published Reach 41

Black Forest Labs just launched the FLUX Pro Finetuning API, allowing creators to customize flagship FLUX Pro models with as few as 1 to 5 reference images. The custom finetunes reliably preserve unique characters or visual styles at up to 4 megapixels and work seamlessly across the full FLUX tool suite.

Anyone who generates images with AI knows the routine frustration of prompt engineering. No matter how many paragraphs you feed it, the model cannot reliably recreate your specific pet, your brand's actual product, or a niche corporate art style. Until now, fixing that usually meant spending hours training messy local LoRA models on consumer hardware.

Black Forest Labs is tackling that headache head-on. The team just launched the FLUX Pro Finetuning API, bringing official customization straight to its flagship image model.

Customizing top-tier models with 5 images

The headline feature here is just how little data you need. Creators can now fine-tune a custom version of FLUX.1 [pro] using as few as 1 to 5 example images.

Whether you need the model to recognize a specific person, a pet, clothing items, stickers, or a distinct brand aesthetic, the fine-tuned model retains the full generative versatility of the base model while reimagining those new subjects through simple text prompts.

Quality also seems to outpace community hacks. According to an internal user study shared by Black Forest Labs, results from FLUX Pro fine-tuning won out 68.9% of the time when compared directly against third-party fine-tuning services running on FLUX.1 [dev].

Seamless tool integration and real-world trials

Crucially, you don't have to rebuild your workflow after fine-tuning. Once trained, your custom model works instantly across the company's entire lineup, including FLUX.1 [pro] and FLUX1.1 [pro], supporting outputs up to 4 megapixels.

It also hooks directly into BFL's dedicated editing tools. You can combine a custom fine-tune with FLUX.1 Fill [pro] to handle personalized inpainting on specific characters, or pair it with FLUX.1 Depth [pro] to dictate exact geometric structure while preserving your custom style.

German media giant BurdaVerlag is already running the API in production. Its creative teams used the system to fine-tune models on its children's property Lissy PONY, churning out on-brand visuals for print and digital channels in minutes rather than days.

Why it matters

For commercial creators and creative agencies, character and brand consistency have always been the missing link in generative AI. If you are producing marketing collateral or visual storytelling, this API looks immediately worth testing, simply because it cuts down weeks of dataset preparation to an afternoon test with a handful of clean photos.

Across the industry, this puts heavy pressure on closed competitors like Midjourney. While Midjourney still leans on reference tags and prompt hacks that often hallucinate details, Black Forest Labs is building a legit enterprise production pipeline around API-driven customization.

We think tying fine-tunes directly into depth and inpainting endpoints is a brilliant move that solves practical production needs. That said, relying on as few as 1 to 5 images always raises red flags around overfitting and prompt bleed. Creators will need to see whether the outputs stay flexible once prompt complexity scales up.
