Black Forest Labs drops Flux 1.1 Pro and a dev API
Black Forest Labs just launched Flux 1.1 Pro, an updated image generation model claiming six times faster generation speeds alongside improved visual quality and prompt adherence. The startup also launched a beta API, letting developers integrate the Flux model suite into their apps via its platform or partners like Replicate.

Remember when Grok suddenly started spitting out completely unhinged images across X? The German startup actually powering those visuals, Black Forest Labs, is stepping out of the shadows with serious enterprise ambitions.
The Andreessen Horowitz-backed team just launched a public beta for its official API and rolled out a brand-new flagship model dubbed Flux1.1 Pro.
Six times faster at four cents a pop
Speed is the headline upgrade here. Black Forest Labs claims Flux1.1 Pro generates images six times faster than its predecessor, Flux.1 Pro.
The new model can push outputs up to 2k resolution (2048 × 1080), a capability slated to hit the API shortly. The team also notes clear gains in prompt adherence, overall fidelity, and visual diversity.
Pricing works through a credit tier where $1 nets you 100 credits. Standard image calls start at 2.5 credits, while rendering a frame on Flux1.1 Pro runs 4 credits, essentially 4 cents per generation.
You do not have to build purely on their own infrastructure either. The startup has already plugged Flux1.1 Pro into partner platforms like Together AI, Replicate, Fal.AI, and Freepik.
Safety rails and a billion-dollar valuation
Crucially, the managed API package includes a content moderation layer alongside resolution limits. That stands in stark contrast to their controversial debut with Elon Musk's xAI, where Grok launched Flux without guardrails and triggered a flood of toxic outputs.
Legal questions also linger. The company has never detailed its training corpus, but outputs on xAI suggest copyrighted materials were swept in, posing clear liability risks if rights holders take action.
Still, investors are lining up. Founded by the ex-Stability AI engineers behind Stable Diffusion, the team previously raised $31 million and is reportedly seeking another $100 million at a $1 billion valuation, up from $150 million.
Why it matters
For builders and creators, this API makes one of the most capable image engines on the market instantly accessible without managing GPU clusters. At 4 cents an image and six times the speed, it is finally fast enough for consumer-facing apps, making it well worth testing right now.
For the broader AI ecosystem, Flux is transitioning from an open-source research darling into a commercial competitor ready to fight Midjourney, OpenAI, Ideogram, and Runway.
We think adding an official moderation filter is a very calculated move. The chaotic Grok rollout gave them massive viral mindshare, but enterprise customers need safety guarantees before signing enterprise deals.
That said, high valuations demand real revenue pipelines. Running and training frontier image and video models is brutally expensive, and Black Forest Labs now has to prove enterprise developers will actually foot the bill.
