Apple enters the foldable era with iPhone Duo

Published Reach 48

Apple just unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable device featuring a 7.6-inch inner display and the A20 Pro chip. The dual-screen flagship runs iOS 27 and introduces an overhauled Siri AI capable of onscreen awareness and real-time AI camera tracking. It marks Apple's biggest hardware leap yet to anchor personal AI across flexible displays.

After years of speculation, the foldable iPhone is finally real.

At Apple's fall hardware event, new CEO John Ternus introduced the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s first major form factor shift in years. It starts at $1,999 for 256GB, comes in star white and night sky, and ships on October 23 with pre-orders opening October 16.

Ternus called it the most transformational change to the iPhone since the original. Looking at the hardware, Apple didn't hold back.

A pocketable phone that unfolds into an iPad

Foldable phones have traditionally suffered from awkward cover screens that feel either too tall or too cramped.

The iPhone Duo takes a different route with a 5.4-inch outer display that offers 90 percent of the usable screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Unfolded, you get a massive 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR canvas that is 50 percent larger than an iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both displays share the exact same aspect ratio, ensuring apps scale naturally without weird letterboxing.

Apple applied a matte nano-texture finish to the inner glass, cutting reflections while visually hiding the crease. It also features an under-display FaceTime camera, eliminating notches or punch-holes entirely.

Under the hood, the device packs an A20 Pro chip, a custom vapor chamber, and a dual-battery layout. Apple claims up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner screen. The hinge is built from grade 5 titanium across more than 100 components, rated for IP68 water and dust resistance, and uses Ceramic Shield 2 up front.

Redesigned iOS and clever camera tricks

iOS 27 introduces a tailored interface for the dual-screen setup. The Home Screen dock and navigation controls move to the side of the display, and even the Dynamic Island shifts vertically to keep the canvas open.

Split View lets users run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, complete with saved app pairs. Later this year, both displays will also support the USB-C Apple Pencil.

Cameras get an overhaul too. You get a 48MP main sensor supporting 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision alongside a 48MP ultrawide lens. Because it folds, users can preview rear-camera selfies on the outer screen, or use Kid Cue to play Peanuts animations on the cover screen so toddlers actually look into the lens.

Why it matters

Apple entering the foldable race changes the calculus for premium smartphones.

At nearly $2,000, we think the iPhone Duo is definitely a luxury item rather than a mainstream upgrade. But Apple’s execution looks unusually disciplined. By keeping both screens on the same aspect ratio and leaning heavily into multitasking and Apple Pencil support, Apple is pitching the Duo as a pocket-sized iPad rather than a novelty gimmick.

For power users, creators, and professionals who juggle notes, documents, and communication on the go, this could eliminate the need to carry both an iPhone and an iPad.

However, there are compromises. Under-display selfie cameras historically deliver softer image quality, and trading Face ID for a side-mounted Touch ID sensor might feel like a step backward to long-time iPhone users. Even so, competitors like Samsung will now face intense pressure as Apple’s massive developer ecosystem rallies around large-screen iOS apps.
