Anthropic taps former Stripe CTO to scale its enterprise infrastructure
Anthropic just hired former Stripe CTO Rahul Patil as its new Chief Technology Officer to lead product, compute, and infrastructure engineering. Co-founder and previous CTO Sam McCandlish is moving to Chief Architect to focus entirely on large-scale model pretraining and RL systems. With over 300,000 enterprise customers to support, Anthropic is clearly leveling up its production engineering muscle.

AI labs usually hit the same wall as they scale: frontier models mean nothing to enterprise clients if the API buckles under pressure or latency spikes at random.
Anthropic is tackling that reality head-on. The company just named former Stripe CTO Rahul Patil as its new Chief Technology Officer.
As part of the shake-up, Anthropic co-founder and former CTO Sam McCandlish is moving into a new role as Chief Architect.
Bringing in Stripe's trillion-dollar infrastructure vet
Patil brings more than two decades of hardcore enterprise infrastructure experience to the table.
Most recently at Stripe, he ran the technical organization powering millions of global businesses handling over a trillion dollars in annual volume. Before Stripe, Patil held senior engineering leadership roles across AWS, Microsoft, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
At Anthropic, he will oversee the entire engineering org, spanning product, compute, infrastructure, inference, data science, and security as Claude expands globally.
Founders get back to frontier training
Freeing up the original team is the other half of this move.
Co-founder Sam McCandlish will now focus entirely on large-scale model training as Chief Architect. In addition to leading pretraining, his mandate now covers research productivity and reinforcement learning infrastructure.
Anthropic co-founder and President Daniela Amodei revealed that Claude now powers over 300,000 business customers. Managing that scale requires seasoned operational muscle, not just research intuition.
Why it matters
Anthropic is rapidly shedding its image as a boutique AI safety lab and stepping into the ring as an enterprise cloud heavyweight.
For enterprise developers, this is welcome news. Claude 3.5 Sonnet is arguably the developer favorite right now, but scaling production workloads requires bulletproof reliability, low inference latency, and enterprise-grade security. Patil was hired specifically to deliver that uptime.
We think splitting model architecture from day-to-day engineering leadership is a smart play. All too often, founding researchers get bogged down managing sprawling cloud budgets and ops teams, pulling attention away from frontier discovery.
That said, high-throughput financial infrastructure is built on predictability, while bleeding-edge AI clusters are notoriously volatile. Whether classic hyperscaler discipline meshes cleanly with Anthropic's fast-moving research culture remains to be seen.
