Anthropic hires its first Chief Commercial Officer
Anthropic just appointed enterprise veteran Paul Smith as its first Chief Commercial Officer, taking the role later this year. Smith brings 30 years of go-to-market experience from Microsoft, Salesforce, and ServiceNow. With Claude Code recurring revenue surging over 5x in two months, the move signals an aggressive push to monetize enterprise demand.

Top-tier AI labs love to flaunt benchmark leaderboards and research papers. But when it comes to convincing Fortune 500 boardrooms to hand over multi-million-dollar software budgets, paper releases and viral demo clips only get you so far.
Anthropic just hired its first-ever Chief Commercial Officer, tapping enterprise tech veteran Paul Smith to lead its global revenue operations starting later this year.
Smith brings more than 30 years of enterprise go-to-market experience, having scaled commercial organizations at some of the biggest names in modern software, including Microsoft, Salesforce, and ServiceNow.
Rocket-ship enterprise traction
Alongside the leadership hire, Anthropic dropped several rare data points showing just how fast its commercial engine is spinning.
The company confirmed it now serves hundreds of thousands of active API customers, spanning agile AI startups to the Fortune 500.
Even more striking is the momentum behind Claude Code. According to Anthropic, recurring revenue for the developer-centric tool surged more than 5x in just two months. It turns out that when an AI tool meaningfully speeds up real-world software engineering, businesses write checks very quickly.
Daniela Amodei, President of Anthropic, noted that the company has deliberately focused on building trustworthy, deployable AI systems from day one. She highlighted that Smith's track record will help more enterprises worldwide transition into becoming AI-native.
Smith echoed that sentiment, saying that while Anthropic's recent trajectory is unprecedented, most large enterprises are still in the very early innings of adopting generative AI.
Why it matters
We think this executive hire signals a decisive pivot in the AI race: the battle is moving rapidly from foundation model benchmarks to enterprise sales trenches.
Anthropic has long enjoyed a sterling reputation as the principled, safety-focused lab beloved by developers and researchers. But winning developer mindshare is not the same as winning Fortune 500 procurement cycles. To wrest big-ticket contracts away from OpenAI and its hyperscaler partners, you need seasoned operators who know how to navigate complex enterprise compliance, security audits, and multi-year master service agreements.
For enterprise tech leaders and CTOs, this move means Anthropic is gearing up to offer white-glove onboarding, robust enterprise support, and tailored vertical deployment assistance rather than just a developer portal with credit card billing.
The real test will be execution speed. Enterprise SaaS playbooks built in the Salesforce and ServiceNow eras rely on lengthy sales cycles and predictable roadmaps, whereas generative AI models evolve almost weekly. Smith will have to prove he can build an aggressive go-to-market machine that can keep pace with frontier AI innovation without diluting the safety-first identity that set Claude apart in the first place.
