Anthropic acquires Bun as Claude Code hits $1B
Anthropic just announced the acquisition of Bun, the fast JavaScript runtime and toolkit, to bolster its coding infrastructure. The deal comes as Claude Code reached a massive $1 billion run-rate revenue milestone just six months after launch. Bun will remain open source under the MIT license while supercharging Claude Code workflows.

AI can generate code at blinding speed, but if the local environment takes minutes to install packages and run tests, that agentic magic grinds to a halt. Anthropic just bought the solution to that bottleneck.
Anthropic announced the acquisition of Bun, the wildly popular high-performance JavaScript runtime. Tucked inside the same announcement was a staggering milestone: Claude Code, its autonomous coding agent, crossed $1 billion in run-rate revenue in November, just six months after its general availability launch.
A billion-dollar sprint in six months
Claude Code started as an internal engineering experiment before opening to the public in May 2025. By November, it had reached the $1 billion annual run rate mark at unprecedented speed.
Enterprises like Netflix, Spotify, KPMG, L'Oreal, and Salesforce have already woven it into their engineering workflows. Anthropic made it clear that Bun's underlying speed has been essential in scaling Claude Code's infrastructure, including powering its recently launched native installer.
Buying the fastest engine in web development
Founded by Jarred Sumner in 2021, Bun took the JavaScript world by storm by rewriting the runtime, package manager, bundler, and test runner from scratch with raw performance in mind.
Bun now pulls in more than 7 million downloads every month and boasts over 82,000 stars on GitHub, with production adoption at companies like Midjourney and Lovable. Anthropic Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger noted that the Bun team rethought the entire toolchain from first principles, matching the technical culture Anthropic wants to scale.
For developers worried about corporate ownership, Anthropic pledged that Bun will remain open source under the MIT license, with continued funding to keep it the premier tool for JavaScript and TypeScript builders.
Why it matters
For engineers using Claude Code, this deal means faster execution loops, less waiting on environment setups, and tighter tool integration. If you are a standard JavaScript or TypeScript developer who never touches Claude Code, having Anthropic's deep pockets fund an MIT-licensed Bun gives the runtime serious long-term stability.
For the AI industry, this acquisition marks a major transition. The competition in agentic software engineering is no longer just about who has the cleverest prompt or the highest benchmark score; it is about controlling the raw execution plumbing. If models spend minutes running bloated builds, agents feel sluggish. By owning the fastest runtime in the ecosystem, Anthropic sets a new bar that rivals like OpenAI will likely have to counter.
We think this is an exceptionally smart move because it fixes the real-world friction of agentic workflows right at the system level. The obvious question mark is Bun's long-term independence. Even with an MIT license, maintaining true community-first neutrality while serving as the operational backbone of an enterprise AI titan is a delicate balancing act.
