Amazon drops Nova AI models to undercut rivals on price

Published Reach 52

Amazon just unveiled Amazon Nova, its new lineup of foundation models spanning text, multimodal reasoning, and image/video generation. Available in Amazon Bedrock, the Micro, Lite, and Pro models claim to be the fastest in their classes while slashing costs by at least 75%.

Amazon just crashed the frontier model party with a brand-new lineup called Amazon Nova, and it is taking direct aim at your cloud bill.

While AWS has spent the past year acting as the ultimate AI department store by hosting top models from Anthropic and Meta, it is now stepping into the ring with six proprietary models designed specifically to be cheaper, faster, and deeply woven into its infrastructure.

Six models, a 75% discount, and video generation

Available immediately through Amazon Bedrock, the new Nova family covers almost every modality across 200 languages.

On the reasoning side, Amazon introduced Nova Micro, a text-only speed demon for simple tasks; Nova Lite, an ultra-fast multimodal model for quick vision and text processing; and Nova Pro, the balanced workhorse designed for complex multimodal workflows. Coming in the first quarter of 2025 is Nova Premier, Amazon's top-tier reasoning model that will also serve as a teacher model for custom distillation.

Then come the creatives. Nova Canvas handles image generation, while Nova Reel transforms a single still image into a short cinematic video with basic camera prompts like dolly forward.

The real kicker is the price tag. Amazon claims Nova Micro, Lite, and Pro are at least 75 percent cheaper than the leading models in their respective intelligence tiers on Bedrock, while also claiming the crown as the fastest.

Born from 1,000 internal AI projects

According to Rohit Prasad, Amazon's SVP of Artificial General Intelligence, the company is already running roughly 1,000 generative AI applications internally. Nova was essentially engineered to solve the exact headaches those internal builders faced around latency, grounding, and runaway API costs.

The models natively support fine-tuning, knowledge bases for retrieval-augmented generation, and agentic workflows that call multiple APIs.

We are already seeing early enterprise traction inside Amazon Ads. Brands using Nova's creative tools have reportedly advertised five times more products and created twice as many images per item, bringing video ad campaigns to smaller merchants who could never afford them before.

Why it matters

We think Amazon's move is a masterclass in enterprise pragmatism. While OpenAI and Google battle for bragging rights on raw benchmark records, Amazon is attacking the practical pain point holding back enterprise adoption: the sheer cost of running millions of daily inference calls.

Slashing API costs by 75 percent while offering native integration with Bedrock's security and data pipelines gives AWS customers a compelling reason to stop shopping elsewhere. For developers building agentic workflows or processing high-volume documents and videos, testing Nova Lite and Pro right now is basically a no-brainer just for the immediate margin relief.

The catch? Amazon's true heavy hitter, Nova Premier, will not arrive until early 2025. That means for the most complex coding and multi-step reasoning, companies will still lean on Anthropic's Claude. But for the vast majority of everyday business automations, Amazon just turned foundational intelligence into a ridiculously cheap commodity.
