Amazon doubles down on Anthropic with another $4B

Published Reach 43

Amazon just poured another $4 billion into Anthropic, bringing its total investment to $8 billion. Under the expanded partnership, Anthropic will use AWS's custom Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its largest models, while AWS customers get early access to fine-tune Claude on their own data. Amazon remains a minority investor without a board seat.

Big tech's favorite playbook in the AI race is getting even more aggressive: pour billions into a frontier lab, then mandate that every single dollar gets spent on your own cloud and chips.

Amazon just announced an additional $4 billion investment in Anthropic, the red-hot creator of Claude and OpenAI's fiercest rival. This fresh cash brings Amazon's total bet on the startup to a whopping $8 billion.

For context, Amazon's initial $2.75 billion check back in March was already the largest outside investment in the company's 30-year history.

All in on AWS silicon

This deal is much bigger than just a massive pile of cash. It completely rewires Anthropic's computing infrastructure.

AWS is now officially Anthropic's primary cloud and training partner. Moving forward, Anthropic will use AWS's in-house Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its largest frontier models.

That is a massive endorsement for Amazon's custom hardware, which has been trying to prove it can compete with Nvidia's stranglehold on AI compute.

AWS customers are getting a major perk out of this, too. They will receive early access to a new feature allowing them to fine-tune Claude models using their own proprietary data directly inside AWS.

Despite the $8 billion commitment, Amazon will remain a minority investor and will not take a seat on Anthropic's board. Interestingly, Google also previously committed $2 billion to Anthropic alongside a cloud deal, making Anthropic the rare darling backed by two competing cloud titans.

The investment also follows a huge momentum streak for Anthropic. Just last month, the company rolled out its breakthrough Computer Use capability, letting Claude operate computers, click buttons, and browse the web like a human.

Why it matters

For developers and enterprises living in the AWS ecosystem, this is a massive win. Being able to fine-tune state-of-the-art Claude models with your own internal data without leaving your AWS environment removes huge data security and integration headaches.

For the broader industry, this is Amazon's definitive counterstrike against the Microsoft-OpenAI juggernaut. While Microsoft locked down OpenAI on Azure, Amazon is now anchoring Claude to AWS. If Anthropic successfully trains its next flagship models on Trainium, it could genuinely challenge Nvidia's pricing power and cloud dominance.

We think Amazon played this brilliantly by intentionally skipping a board seat. It keeps regulators off their back regarding antitrust scrutiny while still locking in long-term cloud revenue. The only real question is how Anthropic will navigate its loyalties down the line, given that Google is sitting on its cap sheet with billions of its own committed cloud credits.
