Zoom drops "video" from its name to become an AI-first platform

Zoom just dropped "Video" from its official corporate name to become Zoom Communications, rebranding itself as an "AI-first work platform." Pressed by Microsoft and Google's bundled office suites, the company is pivoting toward its all-in-one Zoom Workplace and the recently upgraded AI Companion 2.0 to automate routine daily work.

During the pandemic, Zoom became so dominant that its name turned into a verb for video calling. Now, the company wants you to forget that word entirely.

Zoom officially dropped "Video" from its corporate name, rebranding from Zoom Video Communications Inc. to simply Zoom Communications Inc. CEO Eric Yuan declared in a blog post that Zoom is now an "AI-first work platform for human connection" built for hybrid work.

The post-pandemic hangover

Zoom’s rise in 2020 was historic, with revenue quadrupling year-over-year as the world shifted to remote work. But the party ended quickly once offices reopened.

Back in early 2022, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives predicted that pandemic darlings like Zoom and Peloton would see their growth fall off a cliff. He was spot on. Even worse, tech heavyweights like Microsoft and Google integrated video directly into office suites that companies were already paying for, making a standalone video subscription an easy cut.

To fight back, Zoom expanded into a broader office suite called Zoom Workplace, adding team chat, office productivity tools, and even a business email client.

Pitching the four-day workweek

AI is now central to Zoom’s survival pitch. In October, the company launched AI Companion 2.0, upgrading its summarizing and productivity capabilities.

Yuan recently explained his vision on Decoder, pointing out how much time employees waste on routine calls, meetings, emails, and text messages. His endgame is a fully customizable "digital twin" loaded with your institutional knowledge.

According to Yuan, this AI replica could eventually handle a full day’s worth of busywork on your behalf, effectively letting humans work just four days a week.

Why it matters

For regular workers, Zoom’s AI Companion already helps trim down the daily slog of summarizing lengthy meetings and scanning message threads. But the fantasy of an AI clone doing your job while you enjoy a three-day weekend is still firmly in the dream stage.

For the tech landscape, this rebrand shows how brutal the shift from a killer feature to a sustainable platform really is. When Microsoft can bundle Teams and Copilot into existing enterprise agreements, Zoom has no choice but to shed its webcam identity and push into full enterprise productivity.

We think positioning AI as a way to automate administrative pain is clever messaging. However, Zoom’s biggest vulnerability remains unchanged: it lacks the native operating system and document layers that Microsoft and Google control. Convincing enterprise IT to treat Zoom as their primary work hub is going to be an uphill battle.
