Imagine handing your smartphone over to an AI, walking away, and coming back to find your takeout ordered, your hotel booked, and a podcast draft generated from your notes.

Chinese AI unicorn Z.ai, formerly known as Zhipu, has partnered with Alibaba Cloud to roll out a free, general-purpose AI agent for mobile and desktop devices. The tool is available across Android, iOS, and the web, aiming to handle everyday digital chores on your behalf.

A virtual smartphone in the cloud

Here is how it works under the hood.

Users choose between two dedicated modes: a life assistant for personal errands, or an office assistant for work-related tasks.

Inside the app, tapping a button to take over the phone spins up a cloud smartphone interface. This divides into dialogue and mobile phone functions.

Instead of watching the app manually switch screens, you type instructions in plain language without leaving whatever you are doing. Z.ai's AutoGLM engine takes the wheel in the background to execute the steps.

According to the company, the agent can book hotels, order food delivery, install apps, process complex documents, and even generate audio podcasts and videos.

Alibaba Cloud is backing the launch on the infrastructure side. Last month, Alibaba rolled out an advanced agentic coding model within its Qwen3 family, and its cloud platform is now powering the online deployment for Z.ai.

Racing for the domestic void

This rollout comes amid fierce domestic maneuvering.

Z.ai is widely counted as one of China's top tier AI startups, often referred to as one of the country's AI tigers. With the team behind Manus AI reportedly relocating to Singapore amid geopolitical friction, Chinese tech companies are racing to fill the empty space in the consumer agent market.

Why it matters

We think shifting agent execution to a cloud-based phone interface is a genuinely clever design choice. Running native mobile automation on consumer devices usually triggers a nightmare of operating system permissions, security pop-ups, and device incompatibilities. By routing tasks through a remote mobile environment powered by AutoGLM, Z.ai bypasses those hurdles while making it cross-platform on both iOS and Android for free.

For everyday users and remote workers, it is easily worth testing if you want to offload repetitive tasks like restaurant orders or initial document sorting.

Still, massive questions linger around trust and edge cases. Ordering food or booking reservations inevitably brushes up against payments, private credentials, and personal data. If an autonomous agent misreads a prompt and confirms the wrong non-refundable flight or triggers an incorrect transaction, consumer goodwill will evaporate fast.

More broadly, it shows how the AI agent battle is shifting from benchmark scores to execution rails. While rivals are navigating cross-border relocations, Z.ai and Alibaba Cloud are locking arms to turn practical phone automation into a default utility.
