You.com lets you build custom AI assistants for free

Published Reach 36

AI search engine You.com just launched Custom Assistants, allowing anyone to build tailored bots powered by GPT-4o, Llama 3, or Claude 3 Opus for free. Instead of typing long instructions every time, users can configure specialized agents for specific needs in a few clicks. Why it matters: It offers free access to competing top-tier frontier models under a single roof.

Tired of typing the same massive system prompt every time you want an AI to act like a niche expert? AI search engine You.com is rolling out a shortcut.

On Thursday, You.com launched Custom Assistants, a new feature that lets anyone build personalized AI bots for free, powered by the exact same engines driving today's top chatbots.

Pick your favorite frontier model

The idea behind Custom Assistants is simple: save users from constantly typing long preambles. If you need a bot that specializes in audio equipment, you set the parameters once, and it jumps straight to the point without needing speaker-related primers every session.

Instead of locking users into a single system, You.com lets creators choose their underlying brain from three heavyweights: OpenAI's GPT-4o, Meta's open-weights Llama 3, or Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus.

Setting one up is practically frictionless. Users just click More, tap Add New, pick their preferred LLM, name their assistant, and define its instructions and behavioral guardrails.

Fighting for the remaining ten percent

You.com originally launched in 2021 as an alternative to Google, focusing on personalized search and user privacy while integrating AI well ahead of the curve. After ChatGPT popularized the left-sidebar chatbot layout in late 2022, You.com redesigned its own interface in late 2023 to mirror that familiar setup.

Breaking into search remains an uphill battle. Late last year, fellow AI search startup Neeva shut down after concluding that challenging Google was too brutal. With Google controlling over 90% of the global search market, You.com is left scrapping with Bing and DuckDuckGo for the remaining sliver under 10%.

Why it matters

For everyday users and prompt engineers, this feature offers serious practical utility right now. Running custom bots on OpenAI usually requires a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription, and accessing Claude 3 Opus typically comes with its own paywall or API costs. Getting free access to customize bots across GPT-4o, Opus, and Llama 3 in a unified interface is a fantastic deal for research workflows.

For the search industry, it highlights a shifting battleground. Search engines are no longer just indexing links or summarizing web pages; they want to become your personalized operational workspace. By acting as a multi-model aggregator, You.com is giving power users a reason to keep coming back.

We think opening up top-tier models for free is a sharp growth play to steal mindshare from Google and Perplexity. However, subsidizing token-heavy calls to expensive models like Claude 3 Opus poses a glaring unit-economics risk. Unless You.com can rapidly convert these assistant builders into loyal search users, footing the inference bill could become dangerously unsustainable.
