Elon Musk just announced that the Grok 4.2 release candidate is now available in public beta, though you have to select it manually. Unlike prior versions, Musk claims 4.2 can learn rapidly, with xAI promising weekly improvements and release notes to keep pace.

Elon Musk just announced on X that Grok 4.2 has landed as a public beta release candidate. If you want to take it for a spin, you will need to specifically select it in the model picker.

A weekly shipping cadence

Musk noted that the team is actively looking for critical feedback from users.

Unlike prior Grok models, he claimed that 4.2 is capable of learning rapidly. Because of that, xAI is committing to roll out iterative improvements every single week, complete with release notes detailing what changed.

There were no official benchmarks or detailed feature lists attached to the announcement. Still, the release candidate tag signals that an official, stable public launch is likely just around the corner.

Why it matters

Treating a frontier AI model like a fast-moving software sprint with weekly release notes is a bold operational choice. We think xAI is betting heavily on public feedback loops to out-iterate competitors rather than waiting months between major drops.

For users, it is definitely worth playing with if you want to watch a model evolve in real time. That said, without verified benchmark scores, you are essentially acting as an unpaid beta tester for now, so do not rely on it for mission-critical workflows just yet.
