xAI adds image generation to its API

Published Reach 48

xAI just rolled out image generation capabilities in its developer API, starting with a single model called grok-2-image-1212. It outputs up to 10 JPGs per request at $0.07 per image, sitting right between FLUX and Ideogram pricing. The catch: you can't customize size or style yet, and prompts are automatically revised by a chat model.

Developers can now plug Elon Musk’s image generator straight into their own apps.

xAI has quietly rolled out image generation to its API, powered by a single model called grok-2-image-1212. It spits out up to 10 JPG images per request with a rate limit of five requests per second, charging developers $0.07 per generated image.

A standard price tag with early limitations

Price-wise, xAI sits right in the middle of the pack. Black Forest Labs, which partnered with xAI last year to power image generation on X, charges roughly $0.05 per image. Another popular rival, Ideogram, costs about $0.08 on the higher end.

However, the API comes with notable constraints. According to official documentation, developers can't yet tweak image quality, dimensions, or styles. On top of that, input prompts may be automatically rewritten by an internal chat model before processing.

Since launching its developer API in October 2024, xAI has been searching for real cash flow to offset massive compute costs. The company is reportedly pursuing a $10 billion funding round at a $75 billion valuation, while simultaneously expanding its Memphis supercluster and absorbing a generative video startup.

Why it matters

For developers, this isn’t an immediate slam dunk. At seven cents an image without controls for aspect ratio, resolution, or prompt fidelity, it is hard to use for serious production workflows right now.

We think this rollout is less about dominating image generation and more about monetizing fast. With Grok 3 training and massive infrastructure bills piling up in Memphis, xAI needs revenue lines that can start ticking immediately to justify its eye-popping valuation talks.
