Grok joins the open-source Hermes Agent
xAI just enabled Grok subscribers across all tiers to link their accounts directly into Nous Research’s open-source Hermes Agent. The self-improving agent runs on any computer or VPS, maintains persistent cross-session memory, and integrates with messaging apps like Discord and Telegram. Why it matters: subscribers can now tap Grok's models locally without paying extra API fees.

One of the biggest headaches with running self-hosted AI assistants has always been managing API keys and paying twice for models you already subscribe to. xAI is quietly fixing that.
The company announced that Grok subscribers can now connect their accounts directly into Nous Research's open-source Hermes Agent. The integration is available across all Grok subscription tiers and connects via standard OAuth in a browser.
Grok's full stack meets persistent memory
Hermes Agent is designed to run persistently on any computer, sandbox, or VPS, self-improving and building long-term memory across sessions. It also hooks directly into messaging apps like WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, and Signal.
Through the new connection, Hermes gets full access to Grok 4.3 for reasoning, Grok Text-to-Speech for spoken voice, and Grok Imagine for images and video. xAI also teased that more open-source agent integrations are coming soon.
Why it matters
We think letting consumer subscriptions power open-source agents is a genuinely clever move. For users, it removes the friction of API billing if you just want an autonomous assistant running on your server or messaging app.
For xAI, it cements Grok inside the open-source developer workflow without giving away model weights. Instead of locking users inside its own chat window, xAI is letting its subscription travel with them. If this catches on, it could push rival labs to rethink how they handle third-party agent access.
