xAI buys MACROHARDRR building to hit 2GW compute

Published Reach 38

Elon Musk just announced that xAI acquired a third building named MACROHARDRR, pushing the company's training compute capacity to nearly 2GW. The massive expansion highlights xAI's aggressive infrastructure push to power the next generation of Grok models.

Elon Musk just confirmed that xAI's computing footprint is getting another massive upgrade.

Musk announced on X that the company has purchased a third building, cheekily dubbed "MACROHARDRR." According to him, the new facility will push xAI's total training compute to nearly 2 gigawatts (GW). He capped off the post with a plug for users to go download the latest Grok app.

A massive 2GW power play

Reaching nearly 2GW of compute capacity puts xAI in ultra-rare territory.

Training frontier frontier models has effectively turned into a war over raw energy. Musk's team has been expanding infrastructure at a breakneck pace, and this third building is designed to house the massive power supply and hardware needed to keep up with the industry's heaviest hitters.

Why it matters

Frontier AI is no longer just about clever code; it is an infrastructure slugfest measured at the power plant.

For anyone using Grok, this level of dedicated horsepower means xAI will have the muscle to churn through massive training runs much faster, potentially accelerating release cycles for future versions.

That said, securing and routing nearly 2GW of actual juice through an already stressed electrical grid is an enormous logistical hurdle. Musk loves to make bold announcements with meme-heavy names, but we think turning on that much power without facing severe grid pushback will be the true test.
