X tests Grok-generated summaries for trending topics

Published Reach 47

X is testing a new Explore page feature that uses Grok to generate brief summaries explaining why topics are trending. Instead of clicking through vague keywords and hashtags, users get an immediate rundown of the day's key stories. The feature is currently in limited testing and may not roll out globally.

Ever tap on a trending topic on X, only to scroll through dozens of cryptic posts and memes just to figure out what actually happened? X wants its chatbot to do that homework for you.

The platform is currently testing a new layout for its Explore tab that displays Grok-generated summaries explaining why specific topics are trending, according to test screens spotted by user @swak_12 and shared by X News Daily.

Grok takes the Explore page

The new format, which is still in testing and may not roll out to everyone, aims to give users an instant, plain-English breakdown of the day's key stories right on the main discovery page.

Until now, Grok has been locked behind the platform's top-tier X Premium+ subscription since its initial rollout to select users in November. Putting its summaries directly on the Explore tab would be the first time many casual users see Grok's output in the wild.

There is an obvious product tradeoff here. Giving users the core facts upfront might eliminate the frustrating clickbait guessing game, but it also means fewer people will actually click through into the posts below, potentially denting raw engagement numbers.

Playing catch-up on a budget

Pushing Grok to the front lines is part of Elon Musk's broader mission to turn X into a serious AI player.

Musk famously donated $10 million to OpenAI in its early non-profit days, stepped away after a failed bid to become CEO, and later cut off OpenAI's access to X data after watching the startup commercialize on the back of public internet posts. Grok is trained specifically on real-time X content to give it an edge over general-purpose models.

Musk plans to buy more AMD chips and pour over $1 billion into AI development in 2024 across his companies. While that sounds like a massive pile of cash, it is modest compared to Meta's reported $10 billion annual AI spend, or Sam Altman's talks about raising trillions for hardware infrastructure.

Why it matters

We think putting Grok on the trending page is the smartest product move X has made with its AI so far.

For users, finding context on breaking news in a flood of unverified posts is exhausting. Having an AI surface the basic timeline could genuinely fix one of the platform's worst user experiences. Whether regular users will actually get access without a Premium+ subscription, though, remains to be seen.

From a business perspective, X desperately needs to sell its premium tiers. Subscriptions have not taken off in a meaningful way, and turning the Explore page into a live showroom for Grok gives free users a daily reason to care about the chatbot.

The big risk is real-time hallucination. Breaking news on social media is notoriously messy, filled with rumors and bots. If Grok swallows early misinformation and turns it into an authoritative-looking summary at the top of the feed, X could end up supercharging false narratives faster than ever.
