X adds Grok-powered photo editing right in the composer
X just launched a new photo editor directly inside its post composer on iOS, packing long-awaited drawing and text tools alongside two platform exclusives. Users can modify photos via written prompts with Grok-powered "Edit with words" and apply a redaction blur to mask sensitive info before posting. It is live now on iOS, with Android rolling out soon.

If you wanted to circle something in a screenshot or blur out private info before posting it to X, you usually had to jump into your camera roll or a separate editing app first.
X is finally fixing that friction. On April 7, X product lead Nikita Bier announced a brand-new built-in photo editor integrated directly into the post composer.
The feature is currently live for iOS users, with Bier noting that an Android rollout is coming soon, though without a specific date.
Catching up on the basics
At its core, the update gives users long-overdue utilities like freehand drawing and adding text overlays. While these tools sound like table stakes in 2026, X users have spent years dealing with a barebones image uploader.
Alongside the standard annotations, X added a dedicated redaction blur tool. Anyone sharing screenshots can now obscure sensitive details like phone numbers or email addresses right inside the compose screen.
Bier has been pushing small, highly practical quality-of-life updates lately, and this fits that playbook. It does not reinvent how people post, but it keeps creators and reporters from having to leave the app for basic edits.
Grok joins the posting workflow
The marquee addition, however, is a feature dubbed Edit with Words, powered directly by Grok.
Instead of fiddling with manual filters or third-party generative tools, users can modify their photos using natural language prompts inside the editor. It brings lightweight generative image editing straight into the post composer.
This marks a shift for Grok on X. Rather than keeping the model tucked away inside a standalone chatbot tab, X is threading its AI capabilities directly into the core posting routine.
Why it matters
We think this is one of the smartest product integrations X has shipped in a while.
Tucking Grok into the photo editor solves a classic AI adoption problem. Most everyday users will not open a separate bot interface just to tweak an image, but they will happily type a quick prompt if it sits right inside the compose box.
For creators, journalists, and meme makers, having native redaction and quick annotation tools removes real daily friction. It is worth testing immediately if you are on iOS, especially for fast screenshot sharing.
The catch is moderation and authenticity. Giving millions of users friction-free AI image manipulation inside the post composer will almost certainly increase the flow of edited screenshots and altered photos across the feed. How X plans to label or track these Grok-modified images remains an open question.
