A full CG studio in your browser
Wonder Dynamics just launched Wonder Studio, a web editor that swaps actors for full CG characters without motion capture suits or green screens. The tool tracks movement and matches lighting automatically from a single camera angle, while still exporting clean plates, masks, and editable Blender project files. Why it matters: It automates the tedious 80% of visual effects work, opening big-budget character VFX to indie filmmakers.
Putting a realistic CGI character into a movie scene used to require a multi-million-dollar budget, motion capture suits, and a small army of VFX artists. Wonder Dynamics wants to change that with a web browser.
The startup, co-founded by VFX supervisor Nikola Todorovic and Ready Player One star Tye Sheridan, just unveiled Wonder Studio. It is a web-based platform that lets filmmakers drag and drop a CG character into real live-action footage, automatically replacing the actor without any specialized equipment.
No mocap suits, no green screens
Instead of requiring expensive tracking markers or LiDAR rigs, Wonder Studio works from footage shot on a single regular camera.
Once you upload a scene, the AI detects the actor and performs full-body motion capture, tracking hands, body poses, and facial expressions frame by frame. It then removes the actor from the background plate, reconstructs the clean background, and estimates the scene lighting, color temperature, camera movement, and film grain.
Crucially, this is not a glorified TikTok filter that bakes a low-res sticker into the video. The platform exports standard production assets, including clean plates, alpha masks, mocap data, and native Blender project files, allowing artists to tweak every parameter in their existing 3D pipeline.
Todorovic noted that the AI was not trained on artists' work, aiming instead to automate the dull, objective 80% to 90% of routine VFX labor. The system comes with stock character archetypes, but users can upload their own custom FBX models.
The platform has already drawn heavyweight attention. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are using Wonder Studio on their upcoming Netflix feature starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
Why it matters
We think Wonder Studio takes the smartest possible angle on film AI by automating the manual grind rather than trying to replace the artist's creative voice. Instead of spitting out unpredictable hallucinated video, it delivers clean, compositable 3D assets that fit right into professional workflows.
For indie filmmakers and small production houses, this completely lowers the barrier to genres like sci-fi and fantasy. High-end character visual effects can run up to $20,000 per second at major studios. Being able to achieve usable character integration through a browser opens up rapid pre-visualization and festival-ready indie productions that were previously priced out of existence.
For the broader VFX industry, this looks like a much-needed relief valve rather than an immediate job-killer. Post-production houses are notoriously backlogged with streaming and superhero projects. Handing off tedious rotoscoping and match-moving to an automated system frees up artists to focus on shot composition and creative polish.
That said, browser-based automation will face real skepticism when tested against tricky lighting shifts, rapid motion blur, and extreme object occlusion. Wonder Studio is rolling out in beta with a free tier, and anyone working in video production should test it immediately to see if it holds up to real-world footage.
